Moto madness

I took tons of video of the Moto parade on Saturday, but have decided not to kill myself editing it since the most excellent reporters/bloggers over at MazReal made a much better job of it than I ever could.  Please head over to MazReal to check it out! If you think you might want to bring your bike over to Mazatlán next year, the Moto Week website is here – and it is usually the week after Easter....

Friday night party

Above is the statue is of José Ángel Espinoza “Ferrusquilla” – note the moto with three guys on it in at the right! I think Moto Week is my favorite event of the year in Mazatlán.  It is just such a happy time, all the bikers and those watching are having so much fun! This afternoon is the parade, so we’re not done with Moto Week yet!...

Moto week is lots of fun

Above: Members of the Ovejas Negras (Black Sheep) moto club posing with Pedro Infante! Moto week is here and it is so fun to watch all the bikers enjoying our wonderful city.  The parade is Saturday, and I will be there with my new camera, but a few photo opportunities came up as we walked the dogs this morning that I thought I’d share. We’ll head out this evening to get some photos of the show… bikers cruising Olas Altas...

Vamos a la playa

Everyone is at the beach today.  I mean everyone. The picture at the top of this post is one of Mazatlán’s busiest and craziest streets – Ejército Mexicano.  It is usually something like 4 – 7 lanes (if you have driven in México, you know what I mean) and packed with cars.  We make an effort to avoid it at all cost… but how about that picture?  Empty. That’s because everyone is at the beach!  Most stores in town are...

April wildlife adventures

Every April there are a couple of weeks where the termite hatch is on.  When we were new here we were surprised one night when jillions of these flying critters invaded our well-lit home.  We asked our housekeeper what they were and she said they are “things that go to the light.”  Now we know that we just turn out the lights for about 15 minutes and they find some other light to go to and not bother us.  They...

…all the news – that’s fit to print…

Yes, there has been lots going on in the Countdown to Mexico neighborhood, lately – here’s a bit of an update: I’ve been getting together with various women friends pretty frequently – for coffee, for a walk or a bike ride, to share knitting, to discuss books, and probably much more.  One of the things that I love about life here is having so many women friends. Some are here year round and some just come for the winter but...

Mazatlan mixed bag

I accumulate photos that I want to share with all of you… do you like the one at the top of this post?  I know it is a bit hard to see but it is a worker using a jackhammer to remove the cement from a balcony that he is standing on.  I don’t know about you, but I found it hard to even look at him while he was working! Below is a picture you’ve seen before, of one...

I’m in love

with my life, and my life in this place.  I know it wouldn’t be for everyone, but I love it. Yes, I get aggravated at times but over all I love it.  It can be noisy, and dirty, and sometimes it smells like pee.  But I hear laughing throughout the day, every day.  People smile a lot.  Shy smiles, big smiles, every kind. Things are different here.  I like that.  I like walking to the mercado for fruits and vegetables....

Half Baked Update

What’s going on in Mazatlán, you ask?  Well, most sensible people scurry around in the morning and then hide in the shade until the sun goes down.  Although yesterday I wanted to run to the natural foods store so on my way I snapped a couple of photos of the Plazuela Zaragoza renovation.  They are still waiting for tile.  And benches.  And lighting. And to figure out what is going on with the kiosko.  But they have replanted the beds...

Everyone is moving slowly now

It’s summer here, finally, and it is hot and humid.  Everyone is carrying their washcloths with them and mopping their brow as needed.   The streets are empty at mid day, or if you head out you carry your umbrella.  Not for the rain, silly!  For the sun. So far so good for me using chia seeds to help with my hydration this summer.  I seem to have a normal amount of energy and no headaches so far. (knock on wood) ...

The last paint post…

Last time I posted about all the fresh paint going up around town I had said it would be my last post on the topic.  Well, enough people said they enjoyed them so here is another, and yes, this will be my last post about it, for sure!  Especially since we had a few sprinkles last night and I expect the rainy season to begin sometime in the next week – and it really isn’t a good idea to paint...

Centro mini update

There are always lots of projects going on around town.  I thought I’d show you a few, and tell you about a few others. To start with, the good news.  The Mansion of the Garcias, that I have written about before  – most recently here and before that here. The picture above is a picture of the building before work began. The picture below is now. We walked by about a week ago when a crane was delivering some huge...

A walk on the malecon, part two…

A few months ago I posted a video of a walk along the malecon from Olas Altas to the Pulmonia Monument. Well, yesterday was the day that I jumped on my new bike and took you from the Pulmonia Monument to Valentino’s. I hope you enjoy it!  (3 min 52 sec)...

We love visitors

…and we had a wonderful time when our son Phil visited this week on the spur of the moment.  He is still planning on bringing the family for a visit at Thanksgiving, but this trip was a solo one.  That’s the way it is when the kids are in school! Here are a few highlights: One day was a bit overcast, but enjoying a beer under a palapa is still a wonderful way to spend an afternoon!   Of course...

The last drop

of paint, that is.  No more posts, I promise! The house above needs  a little touch up still but it looks so much better!x The one below is a beauty. x This is one of my favorite homes in all of Mazatlán.  I especially love the second floor porch! x How about this one? x Or this? x The paint job below might be called putting lipstick on a pig, but if the concrete was repaired it would be a...
