Summertime Knitting

I know many of you think that it’s too hot to knit here in Mazatlán, but I always have a project going. Here’s what I’ve been up to lately. At the top of the post is the project I’m working on now… a kind of crazy tunic pattern with square holes. I am using my backwards knitting technique a lot on this one! Below are some things I made my granddaughter since she’s going to college in a colder climate...

I’m a knitting fool

Winter in Mazatlán is usually an incredibly social time… but this year I have not been inclined to go out so much. I guess it’s some sort of change in me – I am just so content to stay home and read, knit, sew, and cook. I do get out walking and biking, but the usual comment when I run into people is “I haven’t seen you around, how are you?” All my working life I had to shoehorn my...

Knitting and such

I am always busy with one thing and another, lately much of my fun has been goofing around at home. At the top of this post you’ll see the progress I’ve made on my wool sweater.  I’ve been working on it for ages but have really been pushing to get it finished in time for our trip to Mexico City in a couple of weeks.  I think I’ll make it, too.  Part of one arm and the collar to go!...

Knitting Oaxacan Wool in Sinaloa

Hi all!  It has been a busy time lately, but lots of fun.  We’ve been involved in a project that is almost ready to be blogged about, but not quite.  So hang on a bit longer, and take a look at the table mat I finally finished using the wool I bought in Oaxaca last June. I had intended to felt it but I think I might like it just the way it is.  Plus, when it is felted it...

Just Regular Life in Mazatlán

Life here has finally settled down a bit since the holidays.  I always love the crush of parties and visiting and the festive feeling but I am often ready for life to calm down a few days before it does! Now life is normal for winter – I am just the right amount of busy. I wrote a new column for January’s M! Magazine – on food treats from around México. Last Saturday was the first weekly Organic Market at...

Vogue Knitting in Mexico!

Several months ago I received an email from Rebecca Klassen, a writer for Vogue Knitting.  She was writing an article on México for the World section of their Holiday issue and asked if I’d be willing to talk.  Por supuesto! Of course I would! Rebecca had found me through the Ravelry group I started – <ahref=”http://www.ravelry.com/groups/english-speaking-knitters-in-mexico” target=”_blank”>English Speaking Knitters in Mexico – and wanted to hear about the knitting scene here in Mazatlán and about the gorgeous yarn I had...

What’s going on ’round here…

Well, let’s see. I’ve been busy lately – nothing too crazy to report, but having a good time.  A couple of weeks ago I took a breadmaking class that came at the perfect time for me.  I had been baking bread on and off mostly using the no-knead recipe provided by Pátzcuaro resident Tancho at Rancho Canyon Cookbook.  My results were usually edible but I didn’t feel I had the kind of control I wanted, so I knew I wanted...

You need to be flexible…

In order to live happily  in Mexico, I believe you need to be flexible. Can’t find sage when you want to make Thanksgiving stuffing?  Buy Hierbas Finas and make do. Can’t find lemons?  Use lime, or orange, or grapefruit, and discover how good and different it is. Can’t find peanut butter that you like?  Grind your own or use Nutella. Can’t find clothing that suits your figure?  Have a seamstress clone something you own and love. Can’t find something –...

What’s up?

Well, of course, it is baby Consuelo!  My son has been wonderful, sending lots of pictures and video, but I just HAVE to go visit her…so I am off to Mexico City for a long weekend Friday.  YAY!  In the picture above, do you notice the blanket  that’s keeping her warm?  Yep, that’s the blanket I knit for her. I finished a bit of knitting recently.  This shawl is about all I need at night  in Mazatlán, and I just...

Knitting update

I’ve talked about how I enjoy knitting on the blog before…so I thought I’d show my finished sweater.  I think it’s funny that for me here in Mazatlan this will be something I wear in the winter!  It’s made out of a beautiful cotton yarn that I brought with me when we moved here. I still haven’t found a source for yarn here in Mazatlan, or I guess I should say yarn that I’d consider using.  Not to be elitist,...
