I Love Spring in Mazatlán

I love the change of seasons, especially from Winter to Spring. As you’ll see above, we get a lot of fog in the mornings.  This morning the fog made everything so wet it seemed like it had rained. Why else do I love the Spring here? Even though it is warming up the air still has that lovely cool undercurrent. It’s the end of the growing season here…but I am growing cantelope melons – they should like the upcoming hot...

The Moto Parade in Mazatlán

It has been a busy time lately here in Mazatlán. Semana Santa is actually the week before Easter, but since the kids are out of school for another week after Easter, it turns into a two week party. This year, the Wednesday after Easter Sunday marked the beginning of Moto Week, my favorite event of the year. Bikers come from all over the Americas for the fun of showing off their bikes and getting together with other bikers. There is...

Mazatlán in the News

A few days ago the US State Department issued another travel warning for Mexico.  I feel a bit better about this most recent warning, as they said travel to Mazatlán was fine if you exercise caution late at night and early morning. Most of us don’t stay out until the wee hours too often and feel very comfortable walking and driving all over the city. Those of us who live here know that it is a lovely place.  And if...

Mazatlan’s New Organic Market

I know I mentioned before that we have a weekly organic market here in town.  Every Saturday until the end of May in the Plazuela Zaragoza from 8 am until noon you will find at the latest count about a dozen vendors selling their most excellent organic and homemade items.  You can read the M! Magazine article about the market/a> or if you’re on Facebook, like their Facebook page. This week I came home with such great stuff!  Organic almond...

Just Regular Life in Mazatlán

Life here has finally settled down a bit since the holidays.  I always love the crush of parties and visiting and the festive feeling but I am often ready for life to calm down a few days before it does! Now life is normal for winter – I am just the right amount of busy. I wrote a new column for January’s M! Magazine – on food treats from around México. Last Saturday was the first weekly Organic Market at...

Let’s Make a Community Center in Mazatlán

If you read my previous post, you read about my dream for a community center in Mazatlán.  But it isn’t just my dream, it is one shared by many of us. I hope you’ll read the piece Ken Albanese wrote below. I had a dream the other night. It wasn’t like world peace or anything, but it was a good one nonetheless. I dreamed there was a space here in Mazatlan where expat individuals and groups were creating all kinds...

What’s going on in Mazatlán?

It is late October and that means that snowbirds and folks who like to get out of the heat for part of the summer are returning. (I was going to say returning in droves but to use it with snowbirds seemed wrong… I would have to use flock…. oh, forget it!) Anyway, on many aisles at the grocery store – every time I walk on the malecón – pretty much everywhere – I am greeting someone who has been away....

ToniCol… Sinaloa’s local cream soda cola

I like cream soda. I like root beer. I like cola. I don’t know how they did it, but ToniCol is like all three rolled into one. What is ToniCol? It is a local vanilla flavored soda invented by Antonio Espinosa de los Montero from Rosario, Sinaloa, around 1870. Rosario is a town about 30 miles South of Mazatlán, and is also the hometown of the singer Lola Beltrán, and a pleasant afternoon outing. But even if Rosario is the...

Random Mazatlan

Here are some random observations about my beloved home, Mazatlán. There is always a lady in a caja. Most stores and restaurants have a (usually) female employee as a cashier.  No one else handles the money.  In some places – like fabric stores – there is a separate place to pick up your merchandise.  So yes, you wait three times. (for the employee to write up the merchandise ticket, to pay at the cashier, and at the merchandise pickup) The...

Just a few more days…

Paul has been gone for more than two weeks taking intensive Spanish classes in Puebla. He returns this weekend, at long last. Three weeks is a long time to be apart, and it felt much longer than I expected. This is the second intensive Spanish course he’s taken – a couple of years ago he went to Guadalajara for two weeks and this time for three in Puebla. We’ll be doing a blog post on his experiences when he gets...

Happy days are here again!

I love a clean house. The feel.  The smell.  Just knowing it is really clean.  I’m a pretty good cleaner, too.  In my past I even cleaned apartments on turnover. I always hoped that giving a new tenant a perfectly clean apartment would inspire them to leave it clean when they moved out.  Of course they seldom did, but I learned to start at the top of a room, clean the moldings, doors, windows, etc. and the floors last.  I...

Surfing Adrian

The waves have been pretty nice lately, I imagine part of the reason is the tropical storm Adrian, out in the ocean way west of us. This morning the surfers were enjoying themselves – of course a Saturday morning always has more surfers than a weekday, but today was even more popular than usual.  I counted more than 20 surfers at one point. There are a mix of surfers and bodyboarders.  Bodyboarders like to do a move where they go...

Lovely Mazatlán

Last night we had a wonderful and leisurely dinner with friends at Molika (Belisario Domínguez at Constitución) and then decided to walk over one block to the Plazuela Machado.  We strolled the perimeter, looking at the booths  of hand made items and people watching.  We settled ourselves on a bench close to the music and settled in, like so many Mazatlecos, to enjoy a relaxing evening chatting with friends outdoors. Here are a few things we noticed that make Mazatlán...

Just another sunny morning in Mazatlán

It is such lovely weather in Mazatlán right now. We love it. Warm and a bit humid but with a nice coolish breeze. The waves have been larger than usual lately, probably gearing up for the Surfing Championship coming up the first of June. If you want more info on the Quicksilver Classic Surf Championship, they have a Facebook page here....
