Coping Strategies

I have been having a hard time figuring what to write about to keep the blog going. I know most of my readers are interested in life in Mexico but at the present time life here is mostly life at home. So that’s what I’m going to talk about today. We do go out – to the stores and twice to eat out at a very carefully selected spot – but mostly we are at home. We’ve enjoyed working in...

Our Local Gym – Zona Fitness

Paul and I joined the Zona Fitness gym in Riberas a couple of months ago and have really enjoyed going together at least three times a week. We mostly use the treadmills and bikes but sometimes the weights, too. As gym newbies we like being able to watch people work on the machines so that we get an idea of what they do before we give them a try. There are staff here who are happy to help on an...

The Flexibility Project

I have been into exercise my whole life – if not taking classes then I was riding my bike, walking or jogging, doing kickboxing or calisthenics at home, or working out on my Nordic Track, treadmill, or with weights. Every day I have to do something physically demanding or I don’t sleep well and feel crabby. Lately both Paul and I have come to notice that we need to improve our flexibility. I’ve known for ages that one of the...

Mazatlán’s Morning Workout

Do you like to work out in the morning? I am partial to a brisk 3 to 4 mile walk on the malecón, early enough that it’s light out but not so late that the sun has risen high enough in the sky to hit the walking surface. The photo at the top shows one of the many morning swimmers who regularly set out from the Club de Natación at Playa Norte. The malecón between 6 and 8 in the...

If Carnaval is over, this must be the Triatlón

Mazatlán has been preparing for the last few days for the Gran Triatlón 2015. It’s been an obstacle course on the malecón as everything needed to put on such an event is constructed on the spot. The malecón has had many long blocks of bike rests installed, along with fencing, bathrooms, massage and dressing areas, bleachers, giant triangular floats in the water, a large stage, a trade show area, and much more. Today is the children’s event and tomorrow is...

The City Gym in Mazatlán

Mazatlán has a wonderful city gym, a gym that is totally free to all city residents and guests. Free! No cost! Open 24 hours, too! Yes, you guessed it, it’s the malecón. From the Pedro Infante monument in Old Town (Olas Altas) at the South end to Valentino’s at Rafael Buelna at the North, it is a four and a half mile gymnasium with a world class view. At the top of the post is a picture from this morning,...

Turning a new leaf

I’ve always been very active… walking a lot every day and constantly on the go.  But somehow or other some pounds crept on since we’ve been living here in Mazatlán.  I think there are a number of reasons  that I’ve gained some weight –  I am really enjoying cooking again – and  there are some wonderful breads here in Maz – and breads are my weakness.  But I have also figured out how to make my famous pizza dough using...

It’s the Olimpiada Nacional

The Olimpiada Nacional has been taking place here in Mazatlán during the last few days.  I haven’t been too aware of the proceedings except for the traffic revisions, as the schedule has not been published anywhere that I have seen.   Many of the events take place at the waterfront, though, so we have seen a few runners and bicyclists as we walk along the malecon. The picture at the top is from our local paper, the Noroeste, and shows...

Let’s go for a walk.

Paul and I enjoy walking the dogs every day – and of course we walk all over Centro all the time, too. Every day as I step over or around obstacles I think about taking pictures of them for the blog…and maybe it is a way to feel better about our frequently stubbed toes! The picture at the top is one of our favorite obstacles – bougainvillea. Too thorny to move out of the way so I just step around...
