My Ovarian Cancer Free 5 Year Anniversary

Five years ago I visited the doctor because of a bit of pelvic pain and bloating.  The physical exam and ultrasound quickly accelerated to an MRI, lab tests, and a referral to a gynecological oncologist.  A few days later I was scheduled for surgery and the wonderful community we are a part of rallied round by donating all the blood I needed for surgery.  I  had surgery at Hospital Cemeq, and a large 15 cm tumor was removed.  A week...

Watch “The Truth About Cancer” Documentary

All my blog readers know that I am very interested in health and wellness and that I read a lot about the topic. I watched the 9 part documentary titled The Truth About Cancer earlier this year and I highly recommend it to any of you who want to know more about holistic healing practices and natural remedies too. Visit the website to sign up and you will be sent links to see the documentaries, with viewing available starting April...

My Health Promoting Turmeric Tonic

I admit it. I am a health nut. I’ve written extensively about the things I do to keep healthy, but basically I just eat real food. Fruits and vegetables of course, with as much organic as I can find. I drink a ton of water and seldom have sugar or processed foods. I make, eat and drink a lot of fermented foods. I choose sea salt or Himalayan salt over table salt. I choose coconut or olive oil over canola....

The City Gym in Mazatlán

Mazatlán has a wonderful city gym, a gym that is totally free to all city residents and guests. Free! No cost! Open 24 hours, too! Yes, you guessed it, it’s the malecón. From the Pedro Infante monument in Old Town (Olas Altas) at the South end to Valentino’s at Rafael Buelna at the North, it is a four and a half mile gymnasium with a world class view. At the top of the post is a picture from this morning,...

…and the living is easy…

It’s Summertime. And yes, the living is easy… at least for me, living in this glorious place. This morning on my walk they were busy setting up for the Triathlon this weekend. The entire area around the Fisherman’s Monument was swarming with scaffolds, chairs, tables, giant orange floats and endless racks for hanging bikes. The registration area is set up at the skate park at Playa Norte and it looks like the awards stage will be in front of the...

Old age can have its benefits…

Last month Paul and I went to the ophthalmologist for in depth eye exams. Since we’ve lived here we have only had optometrists check our eyes, and that’s been almost seven years. So off we went – to find out Paul needed a stronger prescription and I don’t need glasses any more, except for reading. I almost didn’t believe him when he told me, but then when we got home I took them off and realized it was the truth....

I’m crazy for probiotics

I am really having fun these days adding lots of good nutrition to our diet using fermented beverages. I wrote about making kefir before, but now I have added kombucha and rejuvelac to my rotation. If you want to know more about these beverages, here is a link to a great site with tons of information. I also bought a book that I’d highly recommend titled Cultured Food for Life....

The 5:2 Diet Update

A while back I had promised to update you on how it was going with the 5:2 diet. If you’re not familiar with it, it is a way of eating where for two non-consecutive you almost fast.  (Women eat 500 calories, and Men, 600) That’s about a quarter of our normal caloric intake. Then for the other five days of the week you eat normally. This eating strategy has lots of health benefits, you can read more about it here....

Making Kefir

When I finished chemotherapy last April I began taking probiotics tablets to help with restoring my body to balanced good health. Chemotherapy is rough on your digestive system and I felt that a couple of bottles of probiotics tablets probably wouldn’t be enough. Fermented foods are frequently mentioned as a way to bring helpful bacteria to your gut – eating sauerkraut, kimchi or kefir. You can buy a product called Yakult in the dairy case here but it is non-organic...

Clean Cooking to Kick Cancer

I love my Mexican kitchen and the habits I have developed that make eating foods that are good for us easy and available. Maybe you’ll find some tips here that will help you incorporate more good foods into your diet. I hope so! I have a habit of making big pots of brown rice every few weeks and freezing it in serving sized batches per the blog post here on Summer Tomato. I always wanted to make brown rice but...

The Power of Meditation

Two months ago I learned to meditate. Such a simple sentence to write, but the changes and improvements to my body and my outlook are huge! I went to Guadalajara with several friends back in June and took a course in Transcendental Meditation. The course is taught over one week – five days of between 1-1/2 and 2 hours per day. I learned the technique easily and have been meditating twice a day for twenty minutes nearly every day since....

My first cleansing fast

This is my first ever cleansing fast, and today is day 12. I have learned so much about myself doing this – I heartily recommend a fast for getting control over your eating and cleaning the toxins out of your body. (Although some people shouldn’t fast – for example those who take Coumadin or blood pressure medication) I read the book Clean: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body’s Natural Ability to Heal Itself and got further inspired to give...

Poor little lambie

In my past life I used to like to drink a diet coke every now and then. I also suffered from migraines. Little did I know that I was triggering migraines every time I drank one. The artificial sweetener they use in diet coke is aspartame, and I am very sensitive to it. Normally I have a lot of energy and have multiple projects going at once. But the last two days I have been down for the count with...

Ch- ch- ch- chia

I’ve been on a bit of a chia seed kick ever since I read blogger Lindi from Mérida’s blog post about the benefits of chia seeds. Chia is an Aztec superfood that has many fantastic health properties, and is really worth looking into, in my opinion!  I’ve been taking a spoonful now and then myself but feeding them daily to the dogs.  I am pretty confident that chia has pretty much cleared up our old dog Lucy’s chronic goopy ear...

Sorta normal, sorta not

It’s not normal to see pictures of my son and his family in facemasks…but as per normal I think they are a handsome family. I walked the dogs this morning and aside from there being fewer people around, it seemed pretty normal.  All the restaurants on the malecon were open and occupied as usual. Paul went to the mercado for me and when he walked in he thought they had widened the aisles.  Turns out they just appeared wider since...
