Dia de los Muertos

We flew to México City at the end of October for a couple of weeks, and it was our good luck to be there for El Dia de los Muertos!  What fun we had! In my previous post I shared a few pictures from one of the parades.  In the album below you will see pictures from our day in Coyoacán, our shopping for flowers and candles for our home altar as well as taking Consuelo out for La Noche...

Fun Parade for Day of the Dead in Mexico City

A couple of hours after arriving in México City we met our son and the family to go to the Día da de Los Muertos parade on Paseo de la Reforma. I have never seen so many people dressed up as catrinas in one place! Children, dogs, entire families were dressed up with amazingly intricate face and body paint. The three pictures at the top (you can arrow through them) are just a sampling of the thousands who participated.  And...

Big News in Our World

Paul and I have been living in Mazatlán for over ten years now. And as much as we truly love it here, will miss all our friends, and are excited to see all the beautification going on, it is time for us to go.  We have made the decision to move to México City. The pull of the city (which you know we love!) and the pull of family are truly irresistible. Our granddaughter is eight years old now, and...

A weekend in CDMX

We are so lucky to have family close by – an hour and a half by plane in México City.  On the spur of the moment we made arrangements to visit, arriving on Friday and leaving on Monday.  Why not? Our granddaughter was so excited – she called multiple times, telling us how excited she was that we were coming.  We know we need to visit more often, it is such a treat to feel like grandparent rock stars. Our...

Hello Again!

Well that was quite a gap between posts! Somehow after TEN YEARS blogging (my first blog post here was October 21, 2006!) all the little odd things that happen each day are no longer odd and blog worthy to me. I need to find my blogging mojo again, and I truly intend to try. What have I been up to? – I had dengue. Well, that was awful. Seriously painful bone pain and overwhelming sleepiness for several days, then an intensely...

August Visit to Tepoztlán, Morelos

Paul and I headed to Mexico City in August for a couple of weeks visiting family. Our youngest granddaughter Consuelo wasn’t back in school yet and our older granddaughter Erica is doing a semester abroad and living in Mexico City with my son and his family. So that’s a two-fer that we couldn’t pass up! (Two granddaughters at once, get it?) We spent the first three days of our trip in Mexico City. We explored downtown, got a tour of...

Two Weeks in Roma Norte

Of course we had a great time in México City. We spent most days on our own, exploring, and most afternoons and evenings with the family… as our son and his wife both work during the day and our granddaughter is in school. We rented an apartment via Air B n B that was located about 10 blocks away from our family. What did we do? Here’s a brief rundown. We roamed around Roma Norte. Our son and his family...

October in Mexico City

It’s high time to check in with family in Mexico City… as you can see our granddaughter is growing fast – she is already driving! I plan on posting while we’re gone (no snarky comments please at my lack of posting lately!) and will surely take lots of pictures. But our main purpose for visiting is to have some time to visit with family and enjoy a bit of fall weather. See you soon!...

A Quick Trip to the DF

Paul and I took a quick trip to México City to visit family just before Christmas. It was just a short trip of five days but it was absolutely fantastic. Thanks to competition in the airline business between Mazatlán and México City our flight was much less expensive than usual, too.  (We flew Volaris.) So in the late afternoon on Thursday our taxi pulled up in front of their place in Colonia Roma. We hadn’t seen them since Easter, when...

Tips for Travel to Mexico City

We’ve visited Mexico City numerous times – but this time we’re here for two weeks and have put together a list of tips for Mexico City, we hope you find them helpful. 1.  Comfortable shoes. Avoid blisters like the plague.  If you’re like us you’ll walk 120+ blocks a day and one little blister can wreck the whole plan. 2.  A smart phone helps. We are always forgetting our map or changing our plans and need to consult a map...

Our Summer Vacation

I know it’s fall in most of the world, but in Mazatlán it is still summer.  That means hot and humid.  Paul and I decided it would be a good idea to have a bit of a break in the cool of Mexico City, and rented an apartment for two weeks of visiting family and exploring.  Our apartment is in Colonia Condesa, a neighborhood we have visited numerous times when our son and his family lived here. But it’s very...

Holding pattern

I feel like I’ve been on a bit of a blogging vacation.  That’s ok, though. I’m entitled.  But why have I been so quiet lately?  Mainly because I’ve been waiting to hear what becomes of the Mexico Today program that I’ve been contributing to since June.  Our contracts expired at the end of the year and we’ve been told that we should just be patient for now as planning and negotiations are still ongoing.  That’s fine, I understand… but it...

Templo Mayor in Mexico City

Templo Mayor in Mexico City is one of my favorite archeological sites.  The reason?  Partly because it is still being excavated. It is wonderful to lean on a railing and watch the workers with brushes cleaning away debris, and partly also because it is right in the center of the city, just a few steps from the zocalo. Of course, the reason it is a few steps from the zocalo is because the ruins are part of the great Aztec...

Music and Food in México City

We all need to eat, but in México City you can really eat well.  In four days in the city I had three really memorable meals.  The first was with my son and his family on Wednesday – a fantastic Indian meal at Dawat in Polanco.  We’d eaten there before and it was just as good this time.  We don’t have Indian food in Mazatlán, so it is one of my (countless) food cravings!   Friday after a a day...
