Big News in Our World

Paul and I have been living in Mazatlán for over ten years now. And as much as we truly love it here, will miss all our friends, and are excited to see all the beautification going on, it is time for us to go.  We have made the decision to move to México City. The pull of the city (which you know we love!) and the pull of family are truly irresistible. Our granddaughter is eight years old now, and...

If You Can, Please Donate

The earthquake on September 19 has devastated México. If you can, please donate! The Topos rescue team would be a fabulous place to donate as well as the Mexican Red Cross. Information on where to donate is below. Topos, Red Cross, Earthquake...

A weekend in CDMX

We are so lucky to have family close by – an hour and a half by plane in México City.  On the spur of the moment we made arrangements to visit, arriving on Friday and leaving on Monday.  Why not? Our granddaughter was so excited – she called multiple times, telling us how excited she was that we were coming.  We know we need to visit more often, it is such a treat to feel like grandparent rock stars. Our...

Two Weeks in Roma Norte

Of course we had a great time in México City. We spent most days on our own, exploring, and most afternoons and evenings with the family… as our son and his wife both work during the day and our granddaughter is in school. We rented an apartment via Air B n B that was located about 10 blocks away from our family. What did we do? Here’s a brief rundown. We roamed around Roma Norte. Our son and his family...

Tips for Travel to Mexico City

We’ve visited Mexico City numerous times – but this time we’re here for two weeks and have put together a list of tips for Mexico City, we hope you find them helpful. 1.  Comfortable shoes. Avoid blisters like the plague.  If you’re like us you’ll walk 120+ blocks a day and one little blister can wreck the whole plan. 2.  A smart phone helps. We are always forgetting our map or changing our plans and need to consult a map...

Our Summer Vacation

I know it’s fall in most of the world, but in Mazatlán it is still summer.  That means hot and humid.  Paul and I decided it would be a good idea to have a bit of a break in the cool of Mexico City, and rented an apartment for two weeks of visiting family and exploring.  Our apartment is in Colonia Condesa, a neighborhood we have visited numerous times when our son and his family lived here. But it’s very...

Templo Mayor in Mexico City

Templo Mayor in Mexico City is one of my favorite archeological sites.  The reason?  Partly because it is still being excavated. It is wonderful to lean on a railing and watch the workers with brushes cleaning away debris, and partly also because it is right in the center of the city, just a few steps from the zocalo. Of course, the reason it is a few steps from the zocalo is because the ruins are part of the great Aztec...

Music and Food in México City

We all need to eat, but in México City you can really eat well.  In four days in the city I had three really memorable meals.  The first was with my son and his family on Wednesday – a fantastic Indian meal at Dawat in Polanco.  We’d eaten there before and it was just as good this time.  We don’t have Indian food in Mazatlán, so it is one of my (countless) food cravings!   Friday after a a day...

The Diego Rivera Murals at the National Palace in Mexico City

México City is a spectacular place.  I enjoyed a lot of cultural attractions while I was there this time, and a favorite for me were the murals of Diego Rivera in the National Palace. If you visit México City you’ll surely go to the Zócalo, the main square downtown.  On one side is the main cathedral, and on another is the Palacio Nacional. This huge building (pictured below) is more than 600 feet long and one of the large balconies...

There’s no place like home…

We love visiting Adam and the family in Mexico City… but we are also happy to get home!  This time I had a severe headache for three days due to the altitude – 7,349 feet above sea level!  And of course  Mazatlán is at sea level!  Finally I visited Dr. Google and found that I should have been taking ibuprofen or tylenol instead of aspirin.  That did the trick!  But then my eyes were burning and my nose was dry...
