Big News in Our World

Paul and I have been living in Mazatlán for over ten years now. And as much as we truly love it here, will miss all our friends, and are excited to see all the beautification going on, it is time for us to go.  We have made the decision to move to México City. The pull of the city (which you know we love!) and the pull of family are truly irresistible. Our granddaughter is eight years old now, and...

Our New Look

Hi Everyone! I decided that summer was the perfect time for a blog refresh – you all don’t even want to know how messy it was behind the scene of my old look, but it’s getting much tidier back there now! You will notice a few changes besides the color and graphics.  At the top of the page the links are different – now Resources has most of the pages you have been used to seeing in the menu bar… I...

Bait and Switch

Last week we had a bit of rain and then a few days of cool. One night we didn’t even use the air conditioning to sleep! I got all excited because it seemed like the weather might have decided to break early, but sadly the hot weather is back. It’s getting a bit wearisome right about now. We do fine – mostly – until October. That’s when we are so sick of the heat we could scream. Most years we...

Eight years of fun in Mazatlán

Life here is less challenging than it was at first, and not just because we have better Spanish. For example the list of things that I buy in the US is getting smaller and smaller. You can now find organic food, decent peanut butter, and Keen sandals. Kindles and iPads make it easy to get any book you want. Netflix Mexico has pretty decent programming. You can even buy things on eBay and with the Estafeta connection have them shipped...

Gardening in the Tropics

Mazatlán isn’t really the tropics, but it’s pretty tropical, I’d say. And down here now is the time for planting your vegetables. The hot and humid weather has finally broken and we know that for the next (almost) eight months the weather will be moderate and sunny. Next Saturday will be the first Farmer’s Market of the season – from 8 – 12 at Plazuela Zaragoza. We are looking forward it, each year it is better and better. I like...

Hello again from your friend in Mazatlán

I’ve been in a bit of a funk with the blog lately… it actually came over me when I started getting ready to write a blog post about the Day of the Dead.  It was a wonderful night that started with First Friday Art Walk and continued on with Day of the Dead festivities, the highlight of which is the callejoneada.  We had a blast… and I did take some pictures and video, but then I realized that since we...

We’re here for good!

The visa process for expats is different in each area of México.  We had no idea before we moved here that the INM office here would be one of the many reasons that we love Mazatlán!  They are efficient and friendly. Here’s our recent experience.  We had held FM-3 visas for four years and FM-2 visas for two.  With the recent changes to immigration policy we decided to change to Residente Permanente, which gives us all rights and obligations...

Five years of the good life in Mazatlán

I remember our first visit to Mazatlán back in February of 2007.  We stayed at Casa de Leyendas, and were introduced to lots of people and activities through the generosity of owners Glenn and Sharon.  Practically as soon as we got home we started planning another exploratory trip. Mazatlán had really grabbed us, that’s for sure.  To make a long story short (go to the Monthly Archives at left if you want to read from the beginning) we bought a...

Nancy’s New Media Do’s & Don’ts

The internet is amazing, isn’t it?  There is so much out there that part of the issue for most people is filtering what gets through to you.  A few years ago it was all about filtering spam – but the technology has gotten better and better and far less spam lands in my inbox these days.  Now we need to filter social media.  Sometimes there’s just too much coming at you! I’ve been accumulating some do’s and don’ts for new...

Holding pattern

I feel like I’ve been on a bit of a blogging vacation.  That’s ok, though. I’m entitled.  But why have I been so quiet lately?  Mainly because I’ve been waiting to hear what becomes of the Mexico Today program that I’ve been contributing to since June.  Our contracts expired at the end of the year and we’ve been told that we should just be patient for now as planning and negotiations are still ongoing.  That’s fine, I understand… but it...

A Weekend in Mérida, Mexico

We recently flew to Mérida for a long weekend – our excuse was to attend the Latin American blogger conference, but we were both just in the mood to get away. It had been more than two years since our last visit, which is just too long!  Jonna and Mimi invited us to stay with them, so once we arranged for all our critters to be cared for we were ready to go! Of course their dogs patiently waited for...

The Countdown to Mexico Mailbag

I get a fair bit of mail at from people who write me directly via the Contact Us page.  I thought I’d give you a sampling of what an average couple of weeks is like in the Countdown to Mexico mailbag. Question:  I would appreciate it if you could include my new Mazatlan Mexico Business Directory in your site. I am a SEO professional and Web Developer moving to Maz in a few months. (website link not shown here) Answer:...

Poor lonely blog…

It has been another week between posts!  What is wrong with me?  Can’t I think of interesting things to say about Mazatlán? Well, yes… and no. After living here more than three years I have to admit every impromptu parade or quirky item being carried on a bicycle doesn’t cause me to run for the camera anymore, it is just life as usual.  Wonderful life as usual, but still. I have to admit, too, that I am probably more involved...

Friends, near and far

Living in paradise can be a great way to meet people!  We have had several wonderful introductions recently that wouldn’t have happened unless we lived here in Mazatlán. My sister was at a party with some people she has known for years – their kids played soccer together through many years of school.  So when my sister heard that they were heading to Mazatlán, she shared that I live here and suggested we get together.  She gave them my blog...

Excuses, excuses

I know I have been a bad blogger lately, but in wintertime there is just so much going on!  And not just social stuff, either.  I actually got some energy for a total redo of my office and sewing stuff and one of our guest rooms.  And after that I sewed myself a new blouse.  (Which, unfortunately, I don’t really like.) In winter activities like moving furniture and sitting at the sewing machine are possible to do without any discomfort...
