We know how to have fun.

We have been off goofing around with daughter Jess instead of blogging… here is a peek into what we were up to for the last week.  Along with reading, talking, coffee drinking, dog walking, and all the rest. She got in Friday afternoon, and our previous post showed the delicious cupcakes we devoured and the beautiful sunset we enjoyed from the top of the Freeman Hotel in Centro. Saturday we took a drive up to El Quelite and had lunch...

Progress is a good thing…

BEFORE DURING It’s worth scrolling up and down a little bit to see the difference between the before photo and the during photo.  There is a little more than a month separating these two photos, and you can see they are making progress on the exterior. A lot of the wrought iron is sanded and painted with the orange rust resistant primer, and most of the lintels, the fascia, and the corbels have been repaired.  I think it looks great!...

What’s going on here?

Three boogie boarders last Friday Last Friday, it was hot.  Really hot.  And sticky.  Humid. Uncomfortable. In the afternoon Paul was heading upstairs for a shower and I suggested we run to the beach for a swim instead.  We changed, grabbed towels, and headed out immediately.  There was a breeze off the ocean, so that was good, but the water was so warm it was almost not refreshing.  We got wet and stood knee deep in the water, letting the...

Random post

Every time I go by this bougainvillea (above) I think about taking a picture of it.  Last time I asked Paul to use his cell phone camera, so now you can see my favorite bougainvillea in town!  (one block west of Belisario Dominguez on Calle Libertad) The picture below reminded us of San Francisco’s Painted Ladies.  Aren’t they adorable? These houses share the block with the actual house where Pedro Infante lived.   (Constitución over near Rosales I think) Then, just...

Mazatlán’s spectacular sunsets

We decided to go out yesterday for appetizers and a drink, and we headed for our favorite relaxing spot, Le Sorelle.  Red wine for me and a martini for Paul, and various wonderful appetizers shared for dinner.  New potatoes with aoili, assorted nuts and olives, and sun dried tomato bruschetta made for a delicious meal. The Pedro Infante monument (above) is right across and I was thinking it would be funny to set up a webcam and take a...

Summer sunset

Paul and I ate dinner at  a restaurant on the malecon at Olas Altas the other night, and I took a lot of pictures of the sunset, as it went on and on for probably more than an hour.  But don’t worry, I’m just sharing one!  ...

I’m cautiously optimistic…

I love all the old buildings in Centro Historico.  Some of them are really in bad shape, but you can tell they were beauties at one time.  At the top of the post is one I’ve written about before, located at Mariano Escobedo and Niños Heroes.  It is the Mansion of the Garcías, and was constructed in 1870. I had seen people working in there, but I had also been told that it was “just a cleanup.”  Sometimes the city orders...

Water girl

Me at Stinson, about 7 years old I need to be close to the coast.  I can’t even imagine what it would be like to live in the middle of a lot of land.  South Dakota. Nebraska.  Even Colorado.  Somehow it just feels wrong, just too far from the edge. Some of my family lives in Florida.  I’ve visited, and can never get used to the sun rising over water and setting over land.  I’m just a West coast girl,...

We hit the big time?

The director of the Instituto Sinaloense de Cultura, Sergio Jacobo, officially starts the filming There’s a movie being filmed in Mazatlán this week.  It is called “Asesinato y Reencarnación: Un Romance.” It is based on a book by Juan José Rodríguez that’s titled Murder in A Chinese Laundry.  Filming started Monday, and stars Shalim Ortiz, Liz Gallardo, Raúl Méndez, Martha Aura and Ari Brickman.  The director is Eduardo Rossoff. The main drag through Olas Altas in Centro has been shut down now...

Beautiful Mazatlán Evening

Last weekend Paul and I headed out to dinner at Le Sorelle, the restaurant at the Casa Lucila Boutique Hotel.  We like the food there – mostly mediteranean – and the service and atmosphere.  The restaurant and bar has very high ceilings with exposed vigas and the windows open wide so you can watch the sunset.  We sat in big comfy leather armchairs.   Last year we watched an electrical storm from there – it was the perfect place to...

It’s the Olimpiada Nacional

The Olimpiada Nacional has been taking place here in Mazatlán during the last few days.  I haven’t been too aware of the proceedings except for the traffic revisions, as the schedule has not been published anywhere that I have seen.   Many of the events take place at the waterfront, though, so we have seen a few runners and bicyclists as we walk along the malecon. The picture at the top is from our local paper, the Noroeste, and shows...

Tourists, Come Back!

Click here to go to a New York Times article about incentives out there for people considering or rescheduling travel to México. It is Mazatlán’s slow season right now, but I don’t really know why.  It is warm and humid, but not overly so.  I do know that the slow season coming right after the swine flu shutdowns have really affected the economy here. The cruise ships aren’t expected back until the middle of June.  So, if you are thinking...

A step back in time

In early April, we had visitors here for a couple of weeks…and as soon as they left we headed to Mérida for the blogger get together and I never shared any of the photos from their visits.  So, in part in order to avoid all talk of the country-wide shut down, here goes! Son Adam and his family came first.  One not so funny thing…when we left the house to go get them at the airport, Guadalupe was finishing up...

blog post a la carte

Paul and I attended the local Linux users group on Friday, mostly because blogger Jennifer was going to give lessons in Gimp, an open-source photo editing program. I learned some good stuff and am enthusiastic about Gimp, so I came home and fooled around with a few photos that I thought I’d share with you. Paul has now gotten interested in Linux and has spent some time using it and will probably keep working with it just for fun. The...
