Getting up to speed

More project updates!  Here’s the cool top on the kiosko at Plazuela Zaragoza!  I love it! And see the nice spiral staircase going up to the top?  I imagine Danzón on Thursdays will be restarted pretty soon, too. There is a project to repave around the Plazuela Machado.  Everyone was shocked that the city started this job last week, just when our winter tourist season is about to start!  And given the slow progress at the other civic projects in...

Speak of the devil…

Yesterday we got a huge shock when we passed by the Plazuela Zaragoza! I had written about the lack of progress with the renovation of the Plazuela in my last post, and lo and behold – here is progress! The kiosko looks like it is going to be beautiful! There are old-style lamp posts waiting to be installed. There’s a circular stairway waiting to be installed, and a huge quantity of nice looking benches, too. The tile needed to finish...

Half Baked Update

What’s going on in Mazatlán, you ask?  Well, most sensible people scurry around in the morning and then hide in the shade until the sun goes down.  Although yesterday I wanted to run to the natural foods store so on my way I snapped a couple of photos of the Plazuela Zaragoza renovation.  They are still waiting for tile.  And benches.  And lighting. And to figure out what is going on with the kiosko.  But they have replanted the beds...

No drama here.

The temperature and humidity around here keeps cranking up and up.  Sometimes when I get up at night I can’t believe how soupy it is just outside our air conditioned room. We still mostly run the air conditioners at night, but with occasional cool siesta times, too.  We are getting tired of sleeping in the air conditioning – I hate the constant rumble and the air movement makes my eyes water. A couple of nights recently the power has gone...

Shhhhhh… it’s quiet time.

Mazatlán is an interesting place to live because it has a lot of different phases. Carnaval is busy and noisy, Winter is filled with art openings, theater, fundraisers, and other social events. Semana Santa brings lots of tourists to the beaches. Summer school vacation means we can park on our street anytime. Summertime once the kids are back in school is very quiet. And I mean quiet. It’s still hot so people aren’t walking around town as much. All the...

Summer is here, but where is the rainy season?

Summer arrived in Mazatlán a bit late this year, but it is in full swing now.  I think there have only been four rains so far this year, though… and that just doesn’t seem like enough!  Yesterday seemed like a particularly steamy day and towards evening we had our usual discussion about whether it just might rain overnight.  The rain brings a bit of humidity but it cools off the concrete, too, and that helps a lot. In the middle...

Everyone is moving slowly now

It’s summer here, finally, and it is hot and humid.  Everyone is carrying their washcloths with them and mopping their brow as needed.   The streets are empty at mid day, or if you head out you carry your umbrella.  Not for the rain, silly!  For the sun. So far so good for me using chia seeds to help with my hydration this summer.  I seem to have a normal amount of energy and no headaches so far. (knock on wood) ...

We’re back from a break!

Paul’s birthday is in June and each year we have been taking advantage of low season summer specials for hotel rooms in Mazatlán to have a bit of a getaway.  Last year we spent only one night at Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay, and this year decided to spend two nights at the Inn at Mazatlán.  It is great to lounge by the pool and let someone else do the cooking and cleaning! The Inn at Mazatlán’s staff seems very friendly...

Mazatlán’s Shrimp Fleet

Mazatlán has a very large shrimp fleet, and right now they are all in port because the season is closed.  We had an opportunity to see some of the fleet from the water recently and thought we’d share a few photos with you. X X X X If you’re interested in learning a little more about the shrimp boats here in Mazatlan, blogger MazReal did a great post on his visit to the fleet by land here.  ...

The last paint post…

Last time I posted about all the fresh paint going up around town I had said it would be my last post on the topic.  Well, enough people said they enjoyed them so here is another, and yes, this will be my last post about it, for sure!  Especially since we had a few sprinkles last night and I expect the rainy season to begin sometime in the next week – and it really isn’t a good idea to paint...

Centro mini update

There are always lots of projects going on around town.  I thought I’d show you a few, and tell you about a few others. To start with, the good news.  The Mansion of the Garcias, that I have written about before  – most recently here and before that here. The picture above is a picture of the building before work began. The picture below is now. We walked by about a week ago when a crane was delivering some huge...

A walk on the malecon, part two…

A few months ago I posted a video of a walk along the malecon from Olas Altas to the Pulmonia Monument. Well, yesterday was the day that I jumped on my new bike and took you from the Pulmonia Monument to Valentino’s. I hope you enjoy it!  (3 min 52 sec)...

There’s new paint everywhere

There is even more fresh paint in Mazatlán’s Centro Historico than I reported back in March here.  Some of the painting is just the usual homeowners painting their houses before the rainy season comes, and some is a joint project between the Coppel Foundation and the City of Mazatlán.  I thought I’d show you a few from a very small patch of Centro.   The one at the top had needed a lot of concrete repair, but it looks great...

A Bird Tale

Do you remember back in 2008 when Paul and I took care of 50 baby parrots for a couple of weeks?  I wrote about the experience here and here and here. When they left our care I wrote about them here. When they were about a year old Conrehabit released them to the wild, but a few were evaluated as either being too tame or physically unable to live in the wild.  That’s how we ended up with Pancho and...

You can find your inner artist here…

There are a lot of things going on in Mazatlán that you can do or visit if you’re an art lover. During the season (November to May) you can go on the First Friday Art Walk in Centro Historico.  More than 40 artists show their work in a fairly compact area of Mazatlàn’s Old Town.  The Art Walk is from 4 pm to 8 pm, so after you pick up a map and plan your route you can  finish the...
