Mazatlán’s Centro

Another grab bag…

I can’t believe it, but I killed another camera.  Rummaging in my purse for my frequent buyer card at the Soriana checkstand there was a thunk and another camera went to its final resting place.  I have the crummy camera on my ipod touch or the mediocre camera that I can borrow from Paul.  Not such great choices.  I need a good camera.  With shock absorbers, if possible. *** It is the time of year here where there are lots...

Mazatlán’s artistic side…

If you are visiting Mazatlán in the winter, you owe it to yourself to spend the first Friday of each month visiting open artist studios in Centro Historico.  First Friday Art Walk is from 4-8 pm, and you can amble from one studio to another using the maps & artist profiles that are available all over town (and on the website link above).  This month the First Friday art walk is actually taking place on the second  Friday, the 11th,...

…all the news – that’s fit to print…

Yes, there has been lots going on in the Countdown to Mexico neighborhood, lately – here’s a bit of an update: I’ve been getting together with various women friends pretty frequently – for coffee, for a walk or a bike ride, to share knitting, to discuss books, and probably much more.  One of the things that I love about life here is having so many women friends. Some are here year round and some just come for the winter but...

Mazatlan mixed bag

I accumulate photos that I want to share with all of you… do you like the one at the top of this post?  I know it is a bit hard to see but it is a worker using a jackhammer to remove the cement from a balcony that he is standing on.  I don’t know about you, but I found it hard to even look at him while he was working! Below is a picture you’ve seen before, of one...

Mazatlán contrasts

I know a lot of my readers like to know what’s going on about town.  I have written about the updating going on at the Plazuela Hidalgo (also known as Lion Park or Plaza de Los Leones) on Angel Flores in Centro.  Here is a picture of the Plazuela when they had removed the walkway surface but before much had been done.  The picture at the top of the post is a side view of the front of the library...

Fun times with family…

Our son and his family were able to get away from the stormy Pacific Northwest to spend Thanksgiving with us this year. What a treat! They left Bellingham in the middle of a cold snap with snowy conditions and a temperature of 7 degrees…. and arrived in sunny Mazatlán the day before Thanksgiving – and the temperature here was in the low 80’s!  They liked that! We had such a great time!  We spent the day cooking on Thursday and...

Getting up to speed

More project updates!  Here’s the cool top on the kiosko at Plazuela Zaragoza!  I love it! And see the nice spiral staircase going up to the top?  I imagine Danzón on Thursdays will be restarted pretty soon, too. There is a project to repave around the Plazuela Machado.  Everyone was shocked that the city started this job last week, just when our winter tourist season is about to start!  And given the slow progress at the other civic projects in...

Speak of the devil…

Yesterday we got a huge shock when we passed by the Plazuela Zaragoza! I had written about the lack of progress with the renovation of the Plazuela in my last post, and lo and behold – here is progress! The kiosko looks like it is going to be beautiful! There are old-style lamp posts waiting to be installed. There’s a circular stairway waiting to be installed, and a huge quantity of nice looking benches, too. The tile needed to finish...

Shhhhhh… it’s quiet time.

Mazatlán is an interesting place to live because it has a lot of different phases. Carnaval is busy and noisy, Winter is filled with art openings, theater, fundraisers, and other social events. Semana Santa brings lots of tourists to the beaches. Summer school vacation means we can park on our street anytime. Summertime once the kids are back in school is very quiet. And I mean quiet. It’s still hot so people aren’t walking around town as much. All the...

Everyone is moving slowly now

It’s summer here, finally, and it is hot and humid.  Everyone is carrying their washcloths with them and mopping their brow as needed.   The streets are empty at mid day, or if you head out you carry your umbrella.  Not for the rain, silly!  For the sun. So far so good for me using chia seeds to help with my hydration this summer.  I seem to have a normal amount of energy and no headaches so far. (knock on wood) ...

The last paint post…

Last time I posted about all the fresh paint going up around town I had said it would be my last post on the topic.  Well, enough people said they enjoyed them so here is another, and yes, this will be my last post about it, for sure!  Especially since we had a few sprinkles last night and I expect the rainy season to begin sometime in the next week – and it really isn’t a good idea to paint...

Centro mini update

There are always lots of projects going on around town.  I thought I’d show you a few, and tell you about a few others. To start with, the good news.  The Mansion of the Garcias, that I have written about before  – most recently here and before that here. The picture above is a picture of the building before work began. The picture below is now. We walked by about a week ago when a crane was delivering some huge...

The last drop

of paint, that is.  No more posts, I promise! The house above needs  a little touch up still but it looks so much better!x The one below is a beauty. x This is one of my favorite homes in all of Mazatlán.  I especially love the second floor porch! x How about this one? x Or this? x The paint job below might be called putting lipstick on a pig, but if the concrete was repaired it would be a...

There’s new paint everywhere

There is even more fresh paint in Mazatlán’s Centro Historico than I reported back in March here.  Some of the painting is just the usual homeowners painting their houses before the rainy season comes, and some is a joint project between the Coppel Foundation and the City of Mazatlán.  I thought I’d show you a few from a very small patch of Centro.   The one at the top had needed a lot of concrete repair, but it looks great...

There’s a lot of wet paint around here

Winter is the perfect time to paint here in Mazatlán.  The temperature is comfortable – mid 70’s to mid 80’s – and the humidity is low.  But this year in addition to the normal homeowner updating here in Centro there seems to be an effort by the city to get some paint on buildings that badly need it.  I don’t know the details of the program, but with tourism down like it is, putting some additional people to work is...
