An update on Mazatlán’s El Recreo

A lot has been happening over at El Recreo.  I bet you’d like an update – and maybe would like to know what you can do to help. At the top of the page is a picture of the exterior and I’ve pasted on the new logo.  Isn’t it nice?  We are getting bids on signage, hopefully it will be up soon. The picture below is of the Molika @ El Recreo coffee shop space – they are still waiting...

El Recreo Cultural Center in Mazatlán – update

A lot has been accomplished since the first of March when the new entity El Recreo took over the former Recrea space on Calle Constitución in Centro. If you’d like to read my previous posts on the project here they are: the first and the second. I thought I’d bring you up to date on our progress. Casa del Caracol has been using the space for the last few weeks. Owner Laura Medina has created a comfortable, colorful, environment –...

Mazatlán Film & Theater performances were a success!

We are very lucky here in Mazatlán to be able to enjoy interesting international films in English every Tuesday night thanks to Mazatlán Film & Theater, but with the addition of play reading performances we are truly charmed. Last night was the second (and last) performance of Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley.  Both performances were sold out, and the response was enthusiastically positive. The venue is the 50 seat Cinematografo in the School for the Arts in the...

Flamenco in Mazatlán

Friday night we headed out with friends for dinner and a flamenco performance at La Bohemia Restaurant in the Plazuela Machado. I’d read about Citlali Iglesias and her Flamenco dance company, and since the La Bohemia had just reopened, it was a perfect time to try out their food and enjoy the perfomance. La Bohemia’s food was very good. The men had arrachera (a grilled flank steak served with green onions and mashed potatoes,) and the women had eggplant ravioli...

It was a great night of music…

The 2011 Dia de la Musica was a great success!  We enjoyed ourselves and saw some wonderful performances and a fun art exhibit, too!  The picture at the top was from the art exhibit a la vuelta de Venus – on the corner of Venus and callejón del Lazo.  I’ve also made a photo album with more pictures, here. The evening started out late – well the music was to start at 7 and even though we left the house...

Nice times in the City

Coming up Saturday is one of our favorite events of the summer here – Dia de la Musica.  It is actually at night, and there are 21 groups performing at six stages around Centro with live music for more than five hours. The event is free.  Below is the lineup: Programa del Día de la Música 2011: Escenario Machado (calle heriberto frías, en la plazuela) Coro Guillermo Sarabia Camerata Mazatlán Pumcayó (guadalajara) Thesconek t (df) watch video Klezmerson (df) watch...

Mazatlán’s artistic side…

If you are visiting Mazatlán in the winter, you owe it to yourself to spend the first Friday of each month visiting open artist studios in Centro Historico.  First Friday Art Walk is from 4-8 pm, and you can amble from one studio to another using the maps & artist profiles that are available all over town (and on the website link above).  This month the First Friday art walk is actually taking place on the second  Friday, the 11th,...

Flamenco!

Last Saturday we went to the Angela Peralta theater for Romance de Tablao, a flamenco performance by Compañia Profesional Miura Expresión Flamenca, a Méxican dance company. This was our first visit to the theater, and it almost wasn’t.  Paul had gone into the ticket office and inquired about tickets a couple of days before, and was told that they were sold out.  Lucky for us, our friends also inquired – the same morning – and were able to get tickets...

Magical December evening…

It was a magical night last night.  Friends came over…they brought quiche, we made salad and bought crusty bread and wine.  Laughing, good food, interesting conversation…made for an excellent evening. Then, after dinner and coffee we ambled over to the malecon for the free outdoor concert –  Mariachi Vargas with mariachi band Continental and the Mazatlán Symphony Orchestra. We got there after it had already started so the several hundred seats were filled, but we stood on the malecon with...

This life is good!

Of course, we knew it would be, but we never thought it would be this good! Although, Friday when Paul and I went out for Day of the Dead festivities, Henry (the dog) got into the room with the sand the salitre repair guys are using and tracked it all over the house! So a fair bit of time Saturday was spent vacuuming and mopping. But the house gleamed afterwards, which is amazing given the amount of dust that gets...
