Mazatlán’s 2013 Carnaval Statues

One of the things I look forward to the most at Carnaval time is the excitement of the set up and election of Carnaval royalty.Even if you don’t attend the coronations you’ll likely enjoy a fabulous fireworks show at the conclusion of the show. Last week’s election of the King of Joy and the Child Queen had an incredible fireworks show that we enjoyed watching from home! The monigotes along the malecón are another big treat. This year’s theme is...

A Mazatlán Sunset

Mazatlán is an amazing place for sunsets. Every single night the sunset is absolutely beautiful. This is true. The picture above is from last night, a chilly evening by our standards, but a lovely one. I took a lot of pictures as we walked along the malecón, the sky changing by the moment. It was hard to decide which photo to share with you as they are all gorgeous. Mazatlán is starting to get ready for Carnaval, and it seems...

Day of the Dead in Mazatlán

There are so many wonderful holidays here in Mazatlán.  How could I possibly choose a favorite?  I love Moto Week and of course Carnaval, but what about Semana Santa – or El Dia de la Musica?  Every event is celebrated with a parade and fireworks, por supuesto! But maybe, just maybe, Day of the Dead or El Dia de los Muertos might be my favorite.  It’s such a unique celebration, full of love for family, partying, beer, fireworks, and celebration...

Five years of the good life in Mazatlán

I remember our first visit to Mazatlán back in February of 2007.  We stayed at Casa de Leyendas, and were introduced to lots of people and activities through the generosity of owners Glenn and Sharon.  Practically as soon as we got home we started planning another exploratory trip. Mazatlán had really grabbed us, that’s for sure.  To make a long story short (go to the Monthly Archives at left if you want to read from the beginning) we bought a...

The Butterfly Effect and Mazatlán

It’s funny how things come in groups.  I read an excellent article recently called Romney Jumps the Shark: Libya, Egypt and the Butterfly Effect. You know the butterfly effect – to quote the article above: The late science fiction writer Ray Bradbury authored a short story about time travelers. They were careful, when they went back to the Jurassic, not to change anything, but one of them stepped on a butterfly. When they got back to the present, the world...

Mazatlán’s oldest church is beautiful again

Mazatlán’s oldest church, Templo de San José suffered the loss of its front wall last summer during one torrential rainstorm where we received 9 inches of rain in one day. It has been undergoing repairs for the last 6 months, I think. Finally, the work is complete and it looks wonderful. Especially for a building in this climate constructed beginning in 1831!...

Funny and Lovely Mazatlán

You’ll probably recognize this lovely house that is across the street from the oldest church in Mazatlán, Templo San Jose.  It has been undergoing renovations for a year or two – you’ll recognize the “before” picture below. The picture below is of one of the “trees of heaven” I find so fascinating here in town.  I’ve shown you pictures of it before: Here it is with graffiti: Here it is when they had cut it down and repainted the stump...

My Mazatlán Morning

I was out on my bike this morning, and what a beautiful morning it was! The malecón is WAY less busy now that the tourists have gone home since kids are back to school. I stopped a few times along the way to take pictures with my new camera. Los Pinos above, Playa Norte below. I know many of my readers are up North, dreaming about Mazatlán.  I hope these pictures help you through the separation. If only I could...

Still no rain in Mazatlán

So far the rainy season has been a bust here in Mazatlán.  Most years the rains start very close to June 24.  So that’s six weeks ago.  Since then we’ve had only one real rain.  That was a biggie, too – over two days we got around six inches!  But since then, nada. There’ve been a couple of times that the pavement got wet and we hoped it would come crashing down, but no. Last night the thunder started rumbling...

Mazatlan in the morning

It’s lovely in the morning here.  The sun doesn’t hit the malecón full on until sometime after 8 so if you get out early it is actually nice and cool.  Today I rode my bike North to Valentino’s and thought I’d share a couple of pictures with you. I love being out when the malecón is full of exercisers – people are walking with weights,  jogging, running, skating, and biking.  There are fewer hazards –  inattentive children with little dogs...

Trying to grow edibles in the hot Mazatlán sun…

I have learned a lot trying to grow a few edibles in the summer here in Mazatlán. 1.  I thought that fruits and vegetables that like it hot would love the summer sun here.  At the top of this post you’ll see my pathetic little cantaloupe melon.  When I tried to grow cantaloupes in my garden in the Pacific Northwest I’d always yearn for a longer, hotter growing season.  Well, it can be too hot, for sure.  The little guy...

Mazatlan’s Summer of Dust

A blog reader – Terry – asked for more pictures of the projects here in Centro so what could I do but oblige him? Actually, Paul and I took a walk this afternoon and of course I had to take pictures of everything that was going on. At the top of this post you’ll see a big surprise – new, big, nice, sturdy looking street lights! Who knew? The street in the photo is Angel Flores, and probably the new...

The Theater Space Progresses!

I imagine you’ve been wondering what has been going on with the theater space at El Recreo. A lot, that’s what! There have been regular updates on our Facebook page but my last update here was back in May. At the top of the page you’ll see our new signage. Isn’t it gorgeous? Before I get started maybe you want to look back to March. The picture below is the theater space. The picture below is after a lot of...

More of Mazatlán’s Big Dig

I have taken a couple of walks over the last day or two trying to give you a better idea of the scope of the Big Dig in Mazatlán!  I will say that there is way less mess this week and I can actually start to comprehend what the vision is. Above is a map of the main part of Centro Historico.  The numbers correspond to numbers on some of the pictures to follow.  The light blueish line is my...
