Mazatlan’s New Organic Market

I know I mentioned before that we have a weekly organic market here in town.  Every Saturday until the end of May in the Plazuela Zaragoza from 8 am until noon you will find at the latest count about a dozen vendors selling their most excellent organic and homemade items.  You can read the M! Magazine article about the market/a> or if you’re on Facebook, like their Facebook page. This week I came home with such great stuff!  Organic almond...

A New Year’s Dream for Mazatlan

At the end of a year I always like to do a bit of “summing up.” I think about what went well and what didn’t for the year just ending  and often think of about my hope for the future. I did make my own resolutions this year, but that’s not what I’m talking about here.  I’m talking about my Mazatlán hopes for the new year. So many of my previous “hopes” have come to pass – the new organic...

Flamenco in Mazatlán

Friday night we headed out with friends for dinner and a flamenco performance at La Bohemia Restaurant in the Plazuela Machado. I’d read about Citlali Iglesias and her Flamenco dance company, and since the La Bohemia had just reopened, it was a perfect time to try out their food and enjoy the perfomance. La Bohemia’s food was very good. The men had arrachera (a grilled flank steak served with green onions and mashed potatoes,) and the women had eggplant ravioli...

What’s going on in Mazatlán?

It is late October and that means that snowbirds and folks who like to get out of the heat for part of the summer are returning. (I was going to say returning in droves but to use it with snowbirds seemed wrong… I would have to use flock…. oh, forget it!) Anyway, on many aisles at the grocery store – every time I walk on the malecón – pretty much everywhere – I am greeting someone who has been away....

Tour Mazatlan’s Centro Historico – The Pino Suárez Mercado

This post, about Mazatlán’s Pino Suárez Mercado (market) is the third in the tour of Mazatlán’s Centro Historico. Of course the market would be included on my tour of Centro Historico… but there are several special reasons why I decided to do this post today. Let’s go to the market! At the top of this post is a picture of the exterior of Mazatlán’s Pino Suárez Mercado.  This 1899 structure was built of iron and steel in the art nouveau...

Tour Mazatlan’s Centro Historico – SoFlo area

In planning this blog post I had a bit of a puzzle – what to call the area in Centro that is West of the Plazuela Machado but South of Angel Flores? Paul had a great idea, taking off from SOHO in New York (for South of Houston), SOMA in San Francisco (South of Market) and SODO in Seattle (South of Downtown.)  So, we hereby christen this area SOFLO for South of Angel Flores (or, perhaps in Spanish SUFLO?) Do...

Tour Mazatlan’s Centro Historico – the Plazuela Machado

This is the first in a series of posts showing you around Mazatlán’s Centro Historico.  Today I am going to show you the Plazuela Machado – which is truly the heart of Centro Historico.  At the top of this post is a picture of the Casa Machado (circa 1846) – currently it houses several restaurants and stores on the main level and the Museo Casa Machado upstairs.  You’ll see the view from the second floor a little further down the...

Countdown to Mexico update…

I got back Saturday from a week visiting family in Washington State. I had a wonderful time, of course!  I started off with an inexpensive direct flight from Mazatlán to Vancouver, BC on Westjet Airlines.  This was my first time flying Westjet, and I loved it. During the summer they fly from here to Vancouver and back once a week, on Saturdays.  During the rest of the year they have more flights.  I paid about $250 less than my usual...

It was a great night of music…

The 2011 Dia de la Musica was a great success!  We enjoyed ourselves and saw some wonderful performances and a fun art exhibit, too!  The picture at the top was from the art exhibit a la vuelta de Venus – on the corner of Venus and callejón del Lazo.  I’ve also made a photo album with more pictures, here. The evening started out late – well the music was to start at 7 and even though we left the house...

Nice times in the City

Coming up Saturday is one of our favorite events of the summer here – Dia de la Musica.  It is actually at night, and there are 21 groups performing at six stages around Centro with live music for more than five hours. The event is free.  Below is the lineup: Programa del Día de la Música 2011: Escenario Machado (calle heriberto frías, en la plazuela) Coro Guillermo Sarabia Camerata Mazatlán Pumcayó (guadalajara) Thesconek t (df) watch video Klezmerson (df) watch...

Lovely Mazatlán

Last night we had a wonderful and leisurely dinner with friends at Molika (Belisario Domínguez at Constitución) and then decided to walk over one block to the Plazuela Machado.  We strolled the perimeter, looking at the booths  of hand made items and people watching.  We settled ourselves on a bench close to the music and settled in, like so many Mazatlecos, to enjoy a relaxing evening chatting with friends outdoors. Here are a few things we noticed that make Mazatlán...

Just another sunny morning in Mazatlán

It is such lovely weather in Mazatlán right now. We love it. Warm and a bit humid but with a nice coolish breeze. The waves have been larger than usual lately, probably gearing up for the Surfing Championship coming up the first of June. If you want more info on the Quicksilver Classic Surf Championship, they have a Facebook page here....

One little picture…

There has been a lot of work going on around Centro, without a lot of fanfare. We noticed these new street lights going up here and there on the blocks where the undergrounding of utilities has already been completed. The historic street lights in Centro are mostly the kind that are attached to buildings, so this is something new. This picture also shows the new sidewalk surfaces they are installing. I’m not sure how the streets that get the brick...

Restoring El Chalet de Salvadora Chávez

Long ago when the city of Mazatlán was a small city, Calle Principal was the main drag through town. Actually, that’s what Calle Principal means – Main Street. Many of the houses were quite large and imposing. Now the street is called Belisario Domínguez – not the only change on this special old street. Many of the large mansions have been broken up into several houses, some are restored beauties, some have been left to crumble away, and some are...

End of the season…

Here in Mazatlán, the snowbirds have gone North again and those of us who stay all year wonder why they leave so early. The weather is perfect – in the 80’s during the day and 60’s at night.  The beaches are ours again, and the water is pleasant. Beer is 15 pesos, you can buy a mango on a stick or a cup full of cut up watermelon… and along with a good book, what more could you want?x Last...
