Mazatlán’s Shrimp Fleet

June 20, 2010

Mazatlán has a very large shrimp fleet, and right now they are all in port because the season is closed.  We had an opportunity to see some of the fleet from the water recently and thought we’d share a few photos with you.

If you’re interested in learning a little more about the shrimp boats here in Mazatlan, blogger MazReal did a great post on his visit to the fleet by land here.

    1. So where oh where am I going to get my fresh shrimp?

      1. Tancho, OH NO! I think you just have to be content with frozen for now! We need to let the baby shrimp grow every once in a while!

    1. Thank You.

The MazReal commentators are back in town next week to follow up on Mazatlán artists and sweaty expat life. We also plan to shoot the sea side view of the shrimp fleet using a canoe and grappling hooks. Look out for that photostory.

    1. MazReal, I always look forward to your new posts. I loved the most recent one on Lucila Santiago – we bought a print of hers six months ago that she did in Glen’s workshop. And the sweaty expat life this summer began abruptly exactly 3 days ago.

    1. Has anyone tried to buy shrimp and/or fish directly off the boat? Years ago, you could do that in Aransas Pass, Port Brownsville, Galveston, et al but that was generally gringo-to-gringo business.

    1. Great shots of the sleeping shrimp fleet! I wasn’t aware that shrimping was such a large industry in your area! Your blog has made me hungry for a shrimp coctail!

      1. Les in Texas, You know since I am a vegetarian I’m not up on whether you can buy off the boat or not, especially the Shrimp Ladies are on Serdan just a couple of blocks from us!

Merida Mikey, I think the shrimp and tuna industries are the biggest part of our economy along with tourism. We get several hundred cruise ships a year here, and we also have a large Pacifico Brewery. The city is also home base for Cafe Marino and Coppel among others. So now I think you need a shrimp cocktail AND a Pacifico beer!

    1. I am constantly amazed by the condition of these boats and that people actually go out into storms and deep water on them.

      1. Isla Gringo, I know what you mean, there was an awful lot of rust on those boats!
