FUN! Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween in Mazatlán

The second annual showing of the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show by Mazatlan Film and Theater at El Recreo was a big success! Everyone had a great time and there were some fantastic costumes.  Some people dressed up like Rocky Horror characters and others came in Halloween costumes.  Wine and prizes were provided by Mazatlan Film & Theater sponsor MazatlanMyCity.com and the Jonathon Hotel – there were delicious tapas available to purchase from Sugarpop, too.  At the top of...

The Theater Space Progresses!

I imagine you’ve been wondering what has been going on with the theater space at El Recreo. A lot, that’s what! There have been regular updates on our Facebook page but my last update here was back in May. At the top of the page you’ll see our new signage. Isn’t it gorgeous? Before I get started maybe you want to look back to March. The picture below is the theater space. The picture below is after a lot of...

An update on Mazatlán’s El Recreo

A lot has been happening over at El Recreo.  I bet you’d like an update – and maybe would like to know what you can do to help. At the top of the page is a picture of the exterior and I’ve pasted on the new logo.  Isn’t it nice?  We are getting bids on signage, hopefully it will be up soon. The picture below is of the Molika @ El Recreo coffee shop space – they are still waiting...

El Recreo Cultural Center in Mazatlán – update

A lot has been accomplished since the first of March when the new entity El Recreo took over the former Recrea space on Calle Constitución in Centro. If you’d like to read my previous posts on the project here they are: the first and the second. I thought I’d bring you up to date on our progress. Casa del Caracol has been using the space for the last few weeks. Owner Laura Medina has created a comfortable, colorful, environment –...

What’s Going On In Mazatlán?

It is Semana Santa here in Mazatlán.  The paper says they expect the hotels to be at 100% occupancy starting today.  So far – during the day, anyway – it has been pretty relaxed and not too packed at the beaches and the traffic is still more or less normal.  I expect that to change, though! The picture at the top of the post is from yesterday – I took a bike ride and liked how the lifeguards, Marina, and...

A Space for Community in Mazatlán

There is a wonderful thing taking place in Mazatlán – the birth of a different kind of community space downtown.  The vision is a gathering spot for locals – Mexican, Canadian, American, full time or part time – everyone. Spanish speaking or English speaking (or those, like me, who are a hybrid!)  The new venture – El Recreo – is being developed in the old Recrea space on Calle Constitución between Venus and Niños Heroes. This space became available at...

Let’s Make a Community Center in Mazatlán

If you read my previous post, you read about my dream for a community center in Mazatlán.  But it isn’t just my dream, it is one shared by many of us. I hope you’ll read the piece Ken Albanese wrote below. I had a dream the other night. It wasn’t like world peace or anything, but it was a good one nonetheless. I dreamed there was a space here in Mazatlan where expat individuals and groups were creating all kinds...

Mazatlán Film & Theater performances were a success!

We are very lucky here in Mazatlán to be able to enjoy interesting international films in English every Tuesday night thanks to Mazatlán Film & Theater, but with the addition of play reading performances we are truly charmed. Last night was the second (and last) performance of Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley.  Both performances were sold out, and the response was enthusiastically positive. The venue is the 50 seat Cinematografo in the School for the Arts in the...

Introducing Waltemo

Meet Waltemo, above. He is a small businessman who works on our block in Centro. His business is washing cars. Waltemo is always friendly and happy. He has a good business keeping the cars of everyone in the neighborhood nice and clean. There are also plenty of people who park to go to the local doctors and businesses and he’ll wash their cars, too. Waltemo works hard, mostly seven days a week. He has a wife and a young daughter...
