Thoroughly Modern Us

A friend here in México posted on Facebook that she was excited to receive a book – a hard copy – of Francisco Goldman’s new book Monkey Boy. I’ve read his books before and have been planning on reading this one, too. But that’s not why I bring it up. It’s that she bought a book – a hardback book – and made a bit of an anti- ebook comment. I do miss books once in a while but I...

The Met – Opera in HD comes to Lakeside

Yesterday was the first of many wonderful afternoons of opera here at Lake Chapala. With thanks to the Opera Guild of Chapala probably around 200 – 250 locals (my guess) were able to watch the HD live performance of Puccini’s Turandot simultaneously with many thousands of people around the world. Bringing the Metropolitan Opera of New York HD simulcast to Lakeside was no small feat, I’m sure. There are substantial costs involved and it couldn’t have been done without the...

Music and Food in México City

We all need to eat, but in México City you can really eat well.  In four days in the city I had three really memorable meals.  The first was with my son and his family on Wednesday – a fantastic Indian meal at Dawat in Polanco.  We’d eaten there before and it was just as good this time.  We don’t have Indian food in Mazatlán, so it is one of my (countless) food cravings!   Friday after a a day...

The evening started out late – well the music was to start at 7 and even though we left the house...

Centro mini update

There are always lots of projects going on around town.  I thought I’d show you a few, and tell you about a few others. To start with, the good news.  The Mansion of the Garcias, that I have written about before  – most recently here and before that here. The picture above is a picture of the building before work began. The picture below is now. We walked by about a week ago when a crane was delivering some huge...
