The Diego Rivera Murals at the National Palace in Mexico City

México City is a spectacular place.  I enjoyed a lot of cultural attractions while I was there this time, and a favorite for me were the murals of Diego Rivera in the National Palace. If you visit México City you’ll surely go to the Zócalo, the main square downtown.  On one side is the main cathedral, and on another is the Palacio Nacional. This huge building (pictured below) is more than 600 feet long and one of the large balconies...

Expat Forum in Mexico City

I am leaving early in the morning Wednesday on my way to México City. Paul is staying home this time, as he still works part time and on Fridays helps out at the Luna Gallery. This Friday should be even more interesting as it is also the First Friday Art Walk, so there should be a lot of visitors to the gallery in the early evening. That ought to keep him out of trouble! I’m heading to Mexico City as...

Oaxaca wrap-up

I had such a wonderful time in Oaxaca! If you’ve been reading Countdown to Mexico for a while, you know that I love to knit. I decided that I’d try to find some yarn while I was visiting Oaxaca. The rug weavers in Teotitlán del Valle are expert at using natural dyes to color the yarn that they spin by hand. I didn’t have time on this trip (here’s a link to our visit to Teotitlán del Valle last year)...

Oaxaca, here we come!

I’m getting ready for my trip to Oaxaca on Friday, and I have to admit I am pretty excited.  It will be great to meet everyone but also to get to work on the plan for spreading the word about the México we all love.  The picture above is from our trip to Oaxaca last year. It’s been frustrating for lots of us who live here and love it here to read and hear inflammatory news reports, many of which present...

Back from the big manzana

I am back from a long weekend with my son and his family in Mexico City.  Of course it was wonderful to see them. I arrived Friday morning and spent the morning drinking coffee and playing with Consuelo along with my daughter in law Martha and her mother.  I hadn’t seen her mother in about five years or so – I think the last time we saw her we visited her in Colima while we were exploring places to live...

I’m having a Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, everyone!  I am sorry about my break from blogging for the last week, but I went to Mexico City to visit my new granddaughter…and blogging took a back seat! I flew in to Toluca again, and the savings and the slower pace at the airport make it pretty relaxed travel.  When you get to Toluca, Volaris has a shuttle (actually a big bus) that takes you to their station in San Jose.  From there Adam arranged for...

Fun Weekend in DF

Adam and Martha are expecting their baby in the next couple of weeks.  They are planning on having at least a week or two of “nesting” time with their little one before they invite company so we decided to have a quick visit. We love visiting them and we love the neighborhood they live in – Condesa.  There are a couple of large parks and the walking path down the center of Amsterdam makes the whole neighborhood feel like a...

A Quick Trip to D.F.

Paul and I just got back from a quick trip to México City. (Distrito Federal or D.F.) We had a blast. Our son and his wife live in the Condesa area, a very cool area populated mostly by hip young people. There are two huge parks in the area, Parque México and Parque España. Of course, with these wonderful parks nearby the area attracts people with dogs. It’s a wonderful place to walk the dogs or even get them trained...
