The Big Dig in Mazatlán’s Centro Historico

You all know I love it here.  But there are times when I just shake my head and wonder about how decisions get made. (I’m glad I can shake my head and laugh at the same time!) At the top of this post is the street Heriberto Frias – between Angel Flores and Constitución.  This is the street with Casa Haas, a historic house used for a museum and concerts and ends a block further at the Plazuela Machado.  The...

Pictures from around the house

I’ll get back to regular Mazatlán news soon, I promise!  There’s been lots of work going on over at El Recreo, El Día de la Música is this Saturday, and this Sunday I leave for a a trip to Guadalajara with some girlfriends.  See you soon!...

Just a little construction…

There’s been a lot of digging, dust, concrete, and cobblestones going on in Centro lately.  For weeks the street has been torn up on Vincente Guerrero from Barragán to about Serdan.  The idea has been to create a pleasant walking corridor from the cruise ship terminal to the Plazuela Machado. Above is a picture of Constitución taken from the corner of the Plazuela Machado. Now the work has continued on Calle Constitución from the Plazuela Machado a block or two...

Tropical flowers

Yes, I am playing around again taking pictures of the plants in our yard and goofing around with Photoshop.  In the center picture you’ll notice the Mexican Flag Vine doesn’t look like it normally does – it is making seed pods! Hope you enjoy the photos, I will move on to another topic soon, I’m sure....

Flor de Mayo (Plumeria) in my Mazatlán garden

I am in love with some of the plants that are just ordinary plants around here. But to me they are spectacular – especially the lovely flor de mayo – or to most of you – plumeria. I suppose if someone from Mazatlán moved to Washington State they would be similarly stunned by the rhododendrons and azaleas seen everywhere! I have been playing around with my camera and working on making my photos a bit more memorable.  I hope you...

Life in Mazatlán

Life here is good.  For the ice cream seller every Sunday on the beach to teenagers enjoying the water on their boogie boards.  It’s all good. The video below is from last Friday.  It was around 6 pm and the schools were going to be closed both Monday and Tuesday.  A large group didn’t waste any time getting their boards and getting into the water.  Pretty nice.  As with any videos, you can adjust the quality once you’ve clicked Play...

Mazatlán in pictures

We went for a walk this morning and I thought I’d show you some of what we saw. Some of the pictures above were from Playa Norte.  Some are from a wall on Belisario Dominguez that usually advertises banda concerts, and the three final ones are the Augustina Ramirez school walls. I never take a walk in Mazatlán without taking my camera.  Can you see why?...

Mazatlán garden report

We enjoy spring in the garden. It is wonderful to see the new growth and change. Of course, learning a new climate, plants, bugs, and chores makes this a work in progress for us. At the top of this post you’ll see our pot with three cantaloupe plants. They haven’t even bloomed yet but we are very hopeful that we’ll get a few lovely melons. They love the heat, and that’s one thing we can promise them! Below is a...

The Moto Parade in Mazatlán

It has been a busy time lately here in Mazatlán. Semana Santa is actually the week before Easter, but since the kids are out of school for another week after Easter, it turns into a two week party. This year, the Wednesday after Easter Sunday marked the beginning of Moto Week, my favorite event of the year. Bikers come from all over the Americas for the fun of showing off their bikes and getting together with other bikers. There is...

Mazatlan’s 2012 Carnival – The First Parade

Mazatlán’s first Carnaval parade was yesterday evening, and Paul and I were woefully unprepared.  We knew enough to skip the early part of the parade, which is all the commercial floats by Pacifico, the radio stations, etc. and all the big bus companies drive their big busses through with women throwing candy from the roof. That part leaves the Fisherman’s Monument heading North at about 4:30 pm. But we didn’t think enough about how crowded it would be.  You really...

Mazatlan’s Carnival 2012 – Friday night at Olas Altas

Paul and I headed out to find some dinner and then check out what was going on at Carnival down at Olas Altas.  The big variety show headlining Filippa Giordano was at the baseball stadium, but there was plenty going on at Olas Altas for us!  Here is another photo tour of our evening, and there are a couple of videos, too.  Enjoy!                         Below is a video of...

Mazatlán’s Carnaval – setting up

Paul and I walked down to Olas Altas this morning to see how Carnaval was getting set up.  I thought you might like to go on a little tour with us.                           Click here for a picture and explanation of the laser aquatic show.  (text in Spanish)     This morning there were only the two stages set up in Olas Altas, I imagine they will be working...

Mazatlán’s Carnaval – at the Plazuela Machado

Carnaval events take place throughout the city, with the coronations at the baseball stadium, the parades along the malecón, fireworks at Olas Altas and along the malecón and the street party in Olas Altas.  But there are plenty of Carnaval decorations and events other places, too. The Plazuela Machado has a gigantic silver sculpture in one corner.  In another corner a stage was being set up this afternoon.  The kiosko is decorated with Carnaval flair – Pacifico style. The malecón...
