Henry the happy dog

Do any of you remember the book Harry the Dirty Dog?  It was a favorite of mine when I was a kid, and for some reason our Henry has always reminded me of Harry.  Can you see why?  At the top is the book cover: And here’s Henry last week.  What a mess! Since it has been getting hot here and all the dogs in town seem to be getting their summer haircuts.  We thought we should get Henry one,...

They are waiting for us…

Every day when Paul and I take the dogs for a walk we create a lively diversion for the poor housebound or roof-bound critters on our route.  So, I thought you might enjoy 28 seconds of Mazatlán dogs defending their homes from suspected canine infiltrators.  (Or so they think. I believe Henry and Lucy would rather stay with us.) Other dog walk news: Today  we enjoyed a cup of coffee on the malecon with Linda and Bill from Alamos who...

Expo Canino ’09

Yesterday was Expo Canino ’09. We knew it was something to do with art and dogs and not much else. Below is a gallery of images from the Expo. As always, we had issues with the time. Posters around town said 10 am to 10 pm. An item in the newspaper said it started at 3. We showed up around 4 or 4:30, and aside from a few artworks up nothing seemed to be going on. A friend said later...

Critters we know and love

Paul and I both love animals. When we lived on 10 acres in Washington State we had a variety of animals. We had chickens, of course. I even sold movable chicken houses that I imported from England for a while. We had ducks on our pond. We had rabbits. We had birds – Pionus Maya and Amazon Tiko. We had pygmy goats Lexus and Wrangler. We had a miniature donkey, Sweet Pea. We had various cats over the years. But...

The body remembers

Lucy heading home from a walk – Nov 5, 2006 It’s November today.  I was loafing on the couch listening to music on my MP3 player and knitting.  And all of a sudden I realized that all the music I was choosing was kind of moody, fall-ish music.  And even thought it is a beautiful sunny day here, my body remembers fall. It’s the time of year where leaves swirl in the air and then land to make colorful arrangements...

The Dog Days of Summer

Last night’s sunset was so beautiful! The rainy season really brings out a whole different look to the sky at night, and I like it. Life has been quiet lately, both of us have felt a bit out of sorts. We’re just so used to bopping around town alot and it is just too hot and steamy to do much walking during the day. Paul has been working a fair bit, too. On top of that, the dogs got a...

What happened here?

Paul and I have a thing for black dogs. Back in the US we even named our property Black Dog Farm. Lucy the lab mix was our first black dog. Here’s Lucy with our second black dog, a Scottish Terrier, Angus. Angus died about a year before we moved, of cancer. Angus did have a chance to meet Henry, though. Henry joined our pack when my boss and his family (after careful research and $750) decided (after 1 week) that...

A little of this, a little of that.

Here’s a picture of my new friend. I believe it is a Cinnamon hummingbird (Amazilla rutila). He has decided that he owns our feeder, us, and our patio. If another bird comes while he is here, he chases them off and then immediately returns, making a little beeping sound that I have decided means “I’m back.” I don’t understand why my wrists are the first place on my body to perspire when I start getting hot. Seems strange to me....

Some of us love our new life in Mexico

“Pick up after your dog” sign in Mazatlán   “Pick up after your dog” sign in Bellingham, WA (with bags provided)   I’ve heard stories of a number of people who moved to Mexico and decided to move back to the US before their first year was up. Some are firsthand stories of people known to our friends and family. The stories were told to us in a loving but cautionary way by people who were worried the same thing...

Happy Dogs

What dog doesn’t look happy when they are face down in their food dish? It hasn’t always been that way for us – both our dogs were off and on picky eaters most of their lives. Henry had been known to not eat for more than a day for no reason that we could discern. When we moved here the dogs had been eating a fancy designer expensive dog food. I liked that it was more real nutrition and that...

Normal life

I haven’t written much lately because it has just become normal to live here now so it seems like there isn’t much to say! We work on our Spanish, shop, cook, visit with friends, walk the dogs, read, eat out and the rest. More or less the same things anyone does anywhere. But living here makes all the ordinary things so much better. For example, yesterday we wanted to take a walk in the afternoon. It’s much too hot to...

Ahhh, Sunshine!

It is a beautiful sunny day here in Mazatlan. We are reveling in it, because the last 5-6 days have been chilly by Mazatlan standards, anyway! It has been breezy and hasn’t been warm enough to sit outside unless you are in the direct sun – and when you’re not – brrr. Everyone in town was wearing sweaters and jackets and – god forbid – shoes. This morning we had a number of people due to come over for various...

It’s a dog’s life

Yes, Lucy has the good life, but so do we. There’s nothing like sitting in the sunshine watching a hummingbird feed in the bouganvilla. Paul and I have been doing a lot of sitting in the sun or in our office lately. It’s a happy exile because of all the work that’s being done at our house…these are the only places except the bedroom that aren’t a mess from work in progress. The courtyard is proceeding beautifully. The tile is...

A little stop along the way!

Henry’s back, Lucy, and Tiko in his cage. Lucy and Henry   We’ve been in San Francisco since Friday night. This is my hometown – I lived here until I was 16 – my best friend is here in the city and my sister in Berkeley. We spent Saturday with my sister and her husband prowling around Berkeley. It was great. We had never been to their house – seems like every time we have been in the city...
