Love and Non-Love in Mazatlán

You all know how much I love it here. I loved it one early evening this week when Paul and I strolled along the malecón, stopping here and there to take pictures. The one at the top is one of those lovely evening moments – a group of friends out boogie boarding at the end of the day. Truly gorgeous. The picture below is another good one. I had been hoping that one day the city would make repairs to...

Almost finished tourist corridor in Mazatlán

I got out this morning to take some pictures, unfortunately the work isn’t as far done as I’d hoped.  Above, you’ll see our main cathedral, with a pulmonia passing by in front. We are all a little puzzled about the purpose of these black posts. Love the new light posts, though. All the crosswalk pavers are in a multi-colored pattern. Below you’ll see the white street lamps installed two years ago on the left, in the middle background the new...

What Summer in Mazatlán is Really Like

There aren’t many expats still in town these days, but the hotels are at 100% occupancy, mostly with visitors from other parts of México. It’s the rainy season, but except for our big rain back in June we’ve only had a few light sprinkles here in Centro. We really need the rain. Almost every night the clouds build up and we notice the yellowish bruised looking sky near sunset that in past years always means the rain is coming. But...

Mazatlan’s Summer of Dust

A blog reader – Terry – asked for more pictures of the projects here in Centro so what could I do but oblige him? Actually, Paul and I took a walk this afternoon and of course I had to take pictures of everything that was going on. At the top of this post you’ll see a big surprise – new, big, nice, sturdy looking street lights! Who knew? The street in the photo is Angel Flores, and probably the new...

The Theater Space Progresses!

I imagine you’ve been wondering what has been going on with the theater space at El Recreo. A lot, that’s what! There have been regular updates on our Facebook page but my last update here was back in May. At the top of the page you’ll see our new signage. Isn’t it gorgeous? Before I get started maybe you want to look back to March. The picture below is the theater space. The picture below is after a lot of...

More of Mazatlán’s Big Dig

I have taken a couple of walks over the last day or two trying to give you a better idea of the scope of the Big Dig in Mazatlán!  I will say that there is way less mess this week and I can actually start to comprehend what the vision is. Above is a map of the main part of Centro Historico.  The numbers correspond to numbers on some of the pictures to follow.  The light blueish line is my...

The Big Dig in Mazatlán’s Centro Historico

You all know I love it here.  But there are times when I just shake my head and wonder about how decisions get made. (I’m glad I can shake my head and laugh at the same time!) At the top of this post is the street Heriberto Frias – between Angel Flores and Constitución.  This is the street with Casa Haas, a historic house used for a museum and concerts and ends a block further at the Plazuela Machado.  The...

Just a little construction…

There’s been a lot of digging, dust, concrete, and cobblestones going on in Centro lately.  For weeks the street has been torn up on Vincente Guerrero from Barragán to about Serdan.  The idea has been to create a pleasant walking corridor from the cruise ship terminal to the Plazuela Machado. Above is a picture of Constitución taken from the corner of the Plazuela Machado. Now the work has continued on Calle Constitución from the Plazuela Machado a block or two...

An update on Mazatlán’s El Recreo

A lot has been happening over at El Recreo.  I bet you’d like an update – and maybe would like to know what you can do to help. At the top of the page is a picture of the exterior and I’ve pasted on the new logo.  Isn’t it nice?  We are getting bids on signage, hopefully it will be up soon. The picture below is of the Molika @ El Recreo coffee shop space – they are still waiting...

Mazatlán in pictures

We went for a walk this morning and I thought I’d show you some of what we saw. Some of the pictures above were from Playa Norte.  Some are from a wall on Belisario Dominguez that usually advertises banda concerts, and the three final ones are the Augustina Ramirez school walls. I never take a walk in Mazatlán without taking my camera.  Can you see why?...

What’s Going On In Mazatlán?

It is Semana Santa here in Mazatlán.  The paper says they expect the hotels to be at 100% occupancy starting today.  So far – during the day, anyway – it has been pretty relaxed and not too packed at the beaches and the traffic is still more or less normal.  I expect that to change, though! The picture at the top of the post is from yesterday – I took a bike ride and liked how the lifeguards, Marina, and...

Rooftop Gardening in Mazatlán

Before Paul and I moved to Mazatlán, we lived on ten acres in the country.  We loved to garden, and my vegetable patch was gigantic. (The picture link is during the winter, here’s one from summer) When we moved here we thought we’d be happy just growing ornamentals but as time went on we started to long to grow vegetables again.  With the birth of the Saturday organic market we realized the dreams could become reality.  Paul bought some heirloom...

A Space for Community in Mazatlán

There is a wonderful thing taking place in Mazatlán – the birth of a different kind of community space downtown.  The vision is a gathering spot for locals – Mexican, Canadian, American, full time or part time – everyone. Spanish speaking or English speaking (or those, like me, who are a hybrid!)  The new venture – El Recreo – is being developed in the old Recrea space on Calle Constitución between Venus and Niños Heroes. This space became available at...

Mazatlán in the News

A few days ago the US State Department issued another travel warning for Mexico.  I feel a bit better about this most recent warning, as they said travel to Mazatlán was fine if you exercise caution late at night and early morning. Most of us don’t stay out until the wee hours too often and feel very comfortable walking and driving all over the city. Those of us who live here know that it is a lovely place.  And if...
