Last month Paul and I went to the ophthalmologist for in depth eye exams. Since we’ve lived here we have only had optometrists check our eyes, and that’s been almost seven years. So off we went – to find out Paul needed a stronger prescription and I don’t need glasses any more, except for reading. I almost didn’t believe him when he told me, but then when we got home I took them off and realized it was the truth.
So forty years of glasses and contact lenses are OVER! I had a bit of a spree picking out cheaters at Sanborns and a pair of sunglasses, too!
I remembered during all this that my dad’s eyes also improved in middle age after wearing glasses most of his life. Now my only problem is that I can no longer hide my droopy eyelids behind my glasses, but I have to say I just don’t care. Maybe getting old isn’t so bad.

March 28, 2014Good news, Nancy! After a lifetime of wearing bottle-bottom glasses, my mother got there via cataract surgery. I think you took a better route, though. As for me, I’ve definitely gotten to the reading glasses stage now in my early 50’s. Since I have astigmatism, I’ll probably have to go my mother’s route some time in the coming years. But for now, I’m pretty happy with the combination of contacts and reading glasses, though it’d be nice to have the perfect vision of a 20-year-old.

Kim G. I had astigmatism too! But Isla Gringo from Isla Mujeres wrote me and said the same thing had happened to them and their doctor said it was because of the humid air. So whatever it is, I am a happy camper. I’ve been enjoying your travels, by the way… hope that you’ll get to Mazatlan before you head back North. That’s some road trip!

March 29, 2014Wow, I know my astigmatism improved when I wore hard and semi-rigid contacts, the ophthalmologist said something like it’s because the eye molds to the smooth surface of the contact fixing the “fun house mirror” effect of astigmatism. It would be so cool if my near myopia disappeared too. I tend to walk around the house without my glasses and wear cheaters when I crochet, embroider, or read fine print.

It is so funny how information reaches us… just last night I was wondering if my vision had improved. I was able to read small numbers on the television without my one contact in.
