What I Eat – Vegetarian meals at home

As promised, here are some of the meals I’ve fixed over the last week.  Above you’ll see what I made after visiting the Saturday organic market in the Plazuela Zaragoza.  It’s an open faced organic portabello mushroom sandwich with a baby organic lettuce salad.  Delicious.  The bread was a slice of multi-grain sourdough from Molika bakery.  It was delicious! The picture below is a quesadilla without the queso!  (That means with no cheese!)  I squished up some peruano beans from...

I love my life

I was talking to my best friend yesterday. She lives in San Francisco, where I grew up, and she and I have been best friends for forty-six years. I love her pretty much as much as I can love anyone. She loves to read. She loves to eat great food. She’s funny. She’s generous, sometimes even to a fault. She’s one of the last people in my life who actually knew my mother. She remembers things that I’ve already forgotten. ;She...

Lots more shopping in Mazatlán

Paul and I went out for breakfast this morning at Surf’s Up Cafe on the beach in Nuevo Mazatlán.  (Yes, it was amazingly delicious!)  On our way home we decided to stop at the newly opened Galerías Mazatlan mall.  The Liverpool store has been open for a while but the mall itself just opened November 8.  The other anchor tenant, Sears, isn’t open yet. The mall is a stylish two story mall that is all ready for Christmas.  Poinsettias are...

What I Eat – Smoothies for breakfast

People are curious about eating a vegetarian diet. I get asked frequently “what do you eat?” So I have decided to start a new blog category called What I Eat. Even if you aren’t planning on becoming a vegetarian you might get some good ideas for reducing your use of meat. That would be great. The first entry in my new category is the breakfast smoothie. Paul and I share one nearly every day. I am lucky to have the...

I’m crazy for probiotics

I am really having fun these days adding lots of good nutrition to our diet using fermented beverages. I wrote about making kefir before, but now I have added kombucha and rejuvelac to my rotation. If you want to know more about these beverages, here is a link to a great site with tons of information. I also bought a book that I’d highly recommend titled Cultured Food for Life....

…methinks the lady doth protest too much….

Yes, that’s a quote from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, but every time I see yet another video or article about how great Mazatlán is, I think of it.  I’d love it if Maz would just continue working on making itself a better place to live and to visit and tourism will take care of itself. I do think that our new tourism secretary Francisco Córdova Celaya is doing a good job, and the city continues to make improvements that we all appreciate....

Hello again from your friend in Mazatlán

I’ve been in a bit of a funk with the blog lately… it actually came over me when I started getting ready to write a blog post about the Day of the Dead.  It was a wonderful night that started with First Friday Art Walk and continued on with Day of the Dead festivities, the highlight of which is the callejoneada.  We had a blast… and I did take some pictures and video, but then I realized that since we...

FUN! Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween in Mazatlán

The second annual showing of the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show by Mazatlan Film and Theater at El Recreo was a big success! Everyone had a great time and there were some fantastic costumes.  Some people dressed up like Rocky Horror characters and others came in Halloween costumes.  Wine and prizes were provided by Mazatlan Film & Theater sponsor MazatlanMyCity.com and the Jonathon Hotel – there were delicious tapas available to purchase from Sugarpop, too.  At the top of...
