Sunset

Sunsets in Mazatlán are almost always spectacular. I don’t know how that can be, but it is true. We love to walk over to the malecon in the evening to watch…it is a communal experience with lots and lots of people doing the same thing. Right now in Washington State (where we came from) the sun rises at 5:19 am and sets at 9 pm…and in Mazatlán the sun rises at 6:19 and sets at 7:48. Being this far south...

Crazy plants around here….

Our bamboo is growing really well…and has actually sent off a shoot. I first noticed the new shoot on May 16. Here is a what it measured each day: May 16…….4 inches May 17…….8 inches May 19…….11 inches May 20…….13 1/2 inches May 21…….17 1/2 inches May 23…….25 inches May 24…….29 1/2 inches May 25…….33 inches May 26…….39 inches So, you can see from the above that it has been growing from 3″ to 7″ per day! And we haven’t...

What we miss

Paul and I have been asked what we miss from up North by several people who are considering moving to Mexico. At first we said “nothing” and then realized that there are a few things that we miss – in varying amounts… Natural Peanut Butter….you can get small jars of sweetened peanut butter in most grocery stores, and occasionally I’ll see a decent sized jar of Skippy, but that’s it. I should buy some peanuts and grind them in my...

Let’s go for a walk.

Paul and I enjoy walking the dogs every day – and of course we walk all over Centro all the time, too. Every day as I step over or around obstacles I think about taking pictures of them for the blog…and maybe it is a way to feel better about our frequently stubbed toes! The picture at the top is one of our favorite obstacles – bougainvillea. Too thorny to move out of the way so I just step around...

Mazatlán or Teatlán?

Paul and I recently read the book Kissing the Virgin’s Mouth by Donna Gershten. The book is a novel about Mazatlán…which you will recognize easily, even though the author calls the city Teatlán. The main character, Magda, grows up in a poor family in one of the barrios of Mazatlán. Her father sells tejuino (a corn drink) from a cart. Magda is determined to get a better life for herself – but of course there were many bumps along the...

Gracias, Maestro

Today is the Dia del Maestro here in México and I would sincerely like to thank Hector for his excellent instruction, eternal patience, and ever-present good humor. We are still only beginners but we have come a long way in a few short months. Thank you!...

Fan Time

The weather is heating up a little here in Mazatlán, and we have started turning on the ceiling fans. I just love how much cooler you can feel with just a little air movement. Our house has great flow-through ventilation, and there always seems to be a breeze that will whip from the front gate through the house. Last September and October – our first here in Maz – we did pretty well in the heat and humidity. We found...

More on the D.F. trip

I just had to put a picture (above) of the retablo we bought in the Mercado San Juan. To continue, though. Saturday we jumped in their car along with the dogs and headed to Tepotzlán. Adam and Martha have been looking at property there and we wanted to see the town and the property on this trip. John had done a number of posts on the area recently, and with Adam and Martha’s descriptions, we were very intrigued. The drive...

A Quick Trip to D.F.

Paul and I just got back from a quick trip to México City. (Distrito Federal or D.F.) We had a blast. Our son and his wife live in the Condesa area, a very cool area populated mostly by hip young people. There are two huge parks in the area, Parque México and Parque España. Of course, with these wonderful parks nearby the area attracts people with dogs. It’s a wonderful place to walk the dogs or even get them trained...
