Oaxaca, here we come!

I’m getting ready for my trip to Oaxaca on Friday, and I have to admit I am pretty excited.  It will be great to meet everyone but also to get to work on the plan for spreading the word about the México we all love.  The picture above is from our trip to Oaxaca last year. It’s been frustrating for lots of us who live here and love it here to read and hear inflammatory news reports, many of which present...

Back from the mall

Paul and I just got back from a shopping trip to Guadalajara. We took the bus so it was a very relaxing trip. Six and a half hours to knit and listen to my audio book was a pleasant way to travel. We stayed in Tlaquepaque at the boutique hotel Quinta Don Jose, where we have stayed before. It is a very friendly place, and the grounds are lovely, too.x As happens to me whenever we travel to the interior,...

Fun and amazement in Oaxaca

Friday night we fixed ourselves up kinda cute and headed to the Camino Real Hotel for dinner and the Guelaguetza, a suite of traditional Oaxacan dances.  It took place in the chapel of the former convent, an absolutely beautiful space.  Tables for ten were arranged throughout the room and there was a buffet set up on a raised area at the end.  The stage was centered along one wall.  We sat with a family of four at a table with...

Prowling around Oaxaca

One of the things we like so much about staying in B & B’s is the chatting with other guests at breakfast.  Oaxaca attracts an international crowd, and the breakfast table reflected that.  We met Australians, Italians, French, and Japanese along with Americans.  The ages vary, the knowledge of Mexico varies, but without a doubt you meet people who are really compatible.  One morning we met Tot and her friend Shari from the San Antonio area.  Tot and her husband...

Oaxaca and Monte Albán

Oaxaca.  Just the word Oaxaca makes me think of beautiful textiles, mole, and ancient ruins.  Oaxaca’s Centro Historico is a delight – wide stone block streets with colonial buildings, almost all in good repair.  Several streets in the center of town are closed to car traffic so you can stroll along almost all the way from the Santo Domingo church to the zócalo. During the 2006 teacher’s strike and occupation of the zócalo the zócalo itself was badly damaged, so...

Whirlwind trip to Morelia

Paul and I got back last night from a whirlwind trip to Morelia and Pátzcuaro.  We drove over on Thursday, leaving about 6 am. We packed sandwiches and sodas, and drove straight through, only stopping for gas, and arriving in Morelia about 3:30 pm. (They are an hour later than Mazatlán) I love getting out and seeing different terrain – very green and lush around Tepic, volcanic between Tepic and Tequila, lots of agave between Tequila and Guadalajara.  Lots of...

Yes, it was good

I know all of the bloggers who attended the meet-up have already posted about it, but I still thought I would write my thoughts, random as they are… Jonna and Mimi’s – We have all enjoyed watching the renovation of their house from start to finish, but I have to tell you it is even more wonderful to see in person than in pictures.  The house is elegant in a relaxed way.  The high ceilings, paint colors, and furnishings just...

Mérida was wonderful

It has taken me a while to get through my photos of our trip to Mérida, and I just didn’t want to post until I had them together. It was such a wonderful time. It was said several times that it felt like we had known each other forever. It was really true for me, especially with Wayne, Jonna, and Theresa. We have “known” each other for several years so I guess it wasn’t surprising that we were immediate friends....

Road trip, installment 2

I realized that I hadn’t really said much about Colima in my last post.  It is really a wonderful city.  Son Adam moved there in 1990 to attand college at Tec de Monterrey.  He lived there for about eight years, so of course I visited him frequently and the city feels familiar and friendly to me. It’s only an hour from the coast at Manzanillo.  It has a bustling, urban side, with malls and large boulevards, and recycling bins.  It...

Road trip, installment 1

Paul and I and son Phil and his family piled into our rented minivan for the drive to Colima last Thursday.  We headed out of town to catch the cuota to Tepic, and before we had a chance to feel like we were on our way, what happened?  Another Revolution Day parade – this one in Villa Unión!  Sometimes it seems like parades are a daily event here, and since we had watched one in Mazatlán the day before, I...

Road trip

We’re piliing in the car in an hour to head out on the road.  We’re driving our rented minivan to Colima, where son Phil and his family are attending a wedding.  We’ll stay the night there, and hopefully will get a good visit in with our other son Adam and his wife Martha, too. Then we will say our goodbyes after a wonderful visit and Paul and I will head to Guadalajara for a couple of days.  We’ll be looking...

More Trip Updates

I am not someone who puts several topics together on one post but the last few days have been so full I am just going to plunge ahead. Queretaro on the weekend is an amazing place. Every one of the million residents must come to the Centro to stroll, eat, buy balloons, and enjoy their happy lives. The dancing and music was wonderful – Saturday was the dancers performing the specialities of various States and Sunday was ballroom dancing....

Hola from Queretaro

We have a screwy keyboard here but thought we´d do an update on Mazatlan even though we are now in BEAUTIFUL Queretaro. We went out looking at more houses with a real go-getter young realtor, and fell in love (again) with a wonderful historic home in Centro. Expensive, but amazing. We really like Mazatlan, and if we could swing it we would love that old home. Our experience at the B & B, Casa de Leyendas was wonderful. The...
