Tuesday Update

One of my last posts brought a flurry of comments that I thought I’d respond to in a post instead…. Learning Spanish – Both of us have been doing pretty well, but nowhere near as well as we would like. We manage transactions ok if we have thought it through before hand so we have the expected words handy to the tongue, but sometimes we embarass ourselves or have a brain freeze and feel stupid. People are very helpful and...

Life, continued

Tomorrow is our one month anniversary living here in Mazatlan. We really do love it here, and discover wonderful people and places every day. We continue to become more and more comfortable in our home – a desk for the office is wonderful – no more plastic table and things scattered on the surface. We have drawers! Today we bought two inexpensive chaise lounges for our upstairs terrace since now that the evenings are cool we thought it would be...

Home Sweet Home

We have been in Mazatlan since Friday evening….and here it is Wednesday! It has been a VERY busy time, but we have been having a blast. We spent two days at the B & B – which was wonderful but a pain since we had the dogs with us. Every time we went anywhere I worried they would bother someone but thankfully the only other guest was a working man who was gone all day. We couldn’t take them with...

I’m heading home

Pulmonia It has been so nice to be here, even if it was only for a few days. It is so wonderful to be close to the beach. I feel much more serene when I can walk on the beach with my feet in the cool water. The foamy tingle. The endless sky. Pelicans. I feel connected with the earth in a very primal way. Back home there is a park near our house with huge, old growth cedars...

Nuestra casa, nuestra casa!

Yes, it is our house now! The wire transfers came through, the signatures are done, the notario is paid, and the house is ours! After so much buildup is was incredibly easy. Happy faces and handshakes all around. I went to dinner with the former owner of our house (wow that was fun to type) last night and it was great to finally relax and get to know each other now that it is over! He is getting going on...

Things to do in Mazatlan

There’s a lot to do and see in Mazatlan. We have only scratched the surface…but here are a few things we recommend doing when you are in Mazatlan: Enjoy the Plazuela Machado in the evening. This picture is from our last evening in Mazatlan, after dinner at about 10 pm on Friday. Families are strolling, kids are playing in the kiosko, lovers are kissing on the benches, and people are eating at the many restaurants.   Watch the sunset...

How the whole thing works

The view from the kitchen window. We got back to the US last night from our amazing trip to Mazatlan. The wood floors in our home here were refinished while we were gone, and they look wonderful. I just took a walk around the property, and everything is growing like crazy and looks wonderful. The floor people protected all the shelving and cabinets, but I will need to vacuum most of the floorboards and walls before we get started putting...

Oh, yeah!

The previous owner and the realtor watch while Nancy cuts off the Se Vende signs! The news is out! We have papers signed all around, and the transfer of the fidecomiso is in progress! We bought a wonderful old restored colonial-ish house in the centro in Mazatlan. The house is huge and amazing…we keep pinching ourselves that it will really be ours. The main floor is the original house, nicely redone. The upper floor was added, and has a great...

We’ve Stepped Up the Pace

What a relief it is to know where we’re going to be living! So many decisions and investigations were being put off until we identified the place: Whether to keep one of our cars How expensive would it be to bring down more than will fit in our car What language school What banking options What insurance options What houses are available So, in light of the above, I have gotten at it by putting a whole lot more on...

Mazatlan Is It! (At least for a few years)

The Mazatlan Malecon at Sunset I don’t even know where to start this post – so much has happened and Paul and I have been talking non-stop. Basically, Paul knew right away that he could live in Mazatlan. I wasn’t so sure because my vision of our life in Mexico was in a place that had fewer gringos. I wanted the challenge of navigating without a safety net and was also leery of the way you might get prejudged by...

It’s Pretty Nice Here

We are still in Mazatlan. We like it here a lot but we haven’t “fallen in love” with it like we hope to do when we meet and get to know our new home. The Centro is nice – but in comparison to a lot of Mexican cities we’ve known, the plazas in Centro are very small. We were really hoping for some wonderful plazas that would make bench-sitting part of our daily entertainment. If you’ve ever been to...

Split Personality

Mazatlan is a city of contrasts. There is the Golden Zone, with many fancy hotels, tourist activities and restaurants and the Centro with its older buildings and pretty squares and markets. Oh, and besides that there is the industrial side of the city – it is home to Pacifio Brewing and many other commercial users. We are staying in Centro, in a B & B one block from the water. The malecon is wonderful to walk along…but we’ve only...

We’ll Be Warm Soon

We’re heading out in the morning – and are excited to start on this next chapter in our Mexican adventure. Even though we’ve always interviewed the places we’ve visited as potential new homes, for some reason this trip feels a lot more serious. It’s probably because of our level of commitment as well as Paul’s impending retirement. We’ll be in Mazatlan for a week and then Queretaro for another. We have tours set up with a realtor in each...
