In Mazatlán, shrimp is king! It is a working city, and a lot of the work has to do with fishing – and of course shrimp is a big part of our fishing industry here.
The shrimp boats are these crazy kind of winged creatures – I can’t say I really understand how it all works but I believe the “wings” are structures that help them haul in the nets.
During shrimp season there are always a few of them on the horizon. The other morning I counted 15!
We have read in the paper that the price of diesel has risen so much that the shrimpers weren’t sure they’d make enough on their first run to pay for the fuel to go out again. Paul wondered (being originally from the Midwest) whether it was kind of like the farmers always complaining about their crop yields.
Anyway, the shrimp are now in, and the shrimp ladies who set up their ice/buckets/shrimp sales offices on the street now have nice fresh shrimp to sell.

September 22, 2008Good observation on Paul’s part. I bet that somehow they find the money to make another run…or more!

September 22, 2008I am enjoying reading your tales from Mazatlán and will link you to my favorites so I can keep up with you all there. Thanks for reading my blog and responding. I agree with your feelings about people who decide to live outside the U.S. We are terminal adventurers! Dream on. Live the dream!

September 23, 2008Oooh, divine, fresh fresh shrimp! Enjoy, tell us all the ways you will prepare it! I’m fond of the simple mantequilla y ajo myself, lightly grilled with some squirts of lime. Enjoy!

September 23, 2008Hi All!
IslaGringo – I guess anyone whose livlihood is dependent on forces outside their control will worry and complain…human nature.
Lin – Thanks for coming by, you are one of my regular reads. We just have to come to Merida someday soon!
Jillian – What do they do with octopus? I shudder at the thought.
Jackie & CancunCanuck – I’m a vegetarian, so my enjoyment of shrimp season is more along the lines of watching the boats, etc. Paul likes to make ceviche, also stirfrying so they just turn bright orange. I love they way they look (once they’re cleaned and all) and I think if I ever include any critters in my diet it might be them – especially living here, they are so darned fresh.
