I’ve been in a bit of a funk with the blog lately… it actually came over me when I started getting ready to write a blog post about the Day of the Dead. It was a wonderful night that started with First Friday Art Walk and continued on with Day of the Dead festivities, the highlight of which is the callejoneada. We had a blast… and I did take some pictures and video, but then I realized that since we are now on our seventh Day of the Dead here I just couldn’t write another post about it!
So then I started thinking about seven Carnavals, seven Moto Weeks, seven Marathons, seven Semana Santas, etc etc. Even though every year it’s a little different it just gets redundant. You can see lots of pictures from previous events on the Photos page or by filtering using Categories on the left side of the page.
We attend a lot of events that are well reported on Facebook. Somehow by the time I would get a post done on a fun event it wouldn’t seem that interesting to most of my readers. Like recently we have gone to the art opening at Luna Gallery, to the grand opening of the new location of the Water’s Edge Bistro, to the Angela Peralta theater to see the Carmina Burana and to a play reading performance by Mazatlan Film & Theater. All were great and fun but not something I wanted to blog about. Part of the problem is so many people (me included) are active on Facebook and so pictures and comments go up there right after an event. The immediacy is great.
There’s also the situation where I have felt a certain amount of expectation to be a sort of news agency for Mazatlán. While I love it here and can’t imagine living anywhere else most of the year, I don’t want to feel like I am working publicity for the city. I want to feel free to express myself about the things that Mazatlán doesn’t do well, too. If you do want up to the minute news about Mazatlán, I’d suggest you join Facebook and browse the links on my @Maz page, above.
So, in the future I plan on writing a bit more about the things I am passionate about such as knitting, cooking, exercise, healthy eating and probiotics. But I also have some great ideas for posts that have to do with Mazatlán and life in México that will interest people who love Mazatlán or are interested in moving to México. You assume that everyone is on Facebook and enjoys it. I signed up and look at the page maybe once a month. It is because I don’t understand the obsession of having to look at it every day or miss some important news from a friend. The other reason is that it just seems way too complicated for the information that I want to retrieve from it.
That is way I enjoy reading peoples blogs, simply because they can ramble on to their hearts content as if we were all sitting around BSing at a good friends parlor.
So, I agree with you on the DofD stuff, been there done that, and enough people cover it, so lets get down to the real dirt here……lol

November 13, 2013You’re the only person I know in Mazatlan and the only place I see stuff about Mazatlan! Probably MOST FB people aren’t where we are…….so write whatever you want.
I’ve gotten to the point that some events that I’m not up for, I just don’t go, don’t feel a need to explain it and would much rather right about what I want to
write about, when I want to write!
EVERYTHING you ever write is interesting! You ARE looking fantastic. I try not to think about who reads the blog and just write…….I’m always surprised what comes out. Ha.

November 13, 2013I totally understand where you are coming from as I hit this wall a while back. How many photos can a person post of the same parade event, sea view, mountain,etc.. I find I take my camera with me less and less now when we go out and often regret it.
My focus has changed from being a “newbie” down here to it just being “normal life” and so my blogging has taken a huge downturn.
It seemed all I was posting about was my art and that wasn’t the blog focus so I started the art blog for those posts.
That leaves the Mexico blog sadly lacking a focus at the moment. Hopefully I will get an infusion of “new” stuff to post, who knows.
Whatever you post I will be reading. I always enjoy your posts even if I don’t comment often.

November 13, 2013I wouldn’t worry too much about repeating the same Día de los Muertos post every year. I don’t mean literally of course. But though I’m sure I’ve read at least one of your DdlM posts before, but I don’t remember it exactly. Just be glad you aren’t some TV newsperson covering Groundhog day for the nth time.
I enjoy your posts for your own perspective, and you are really my only connection to Mazatlán. F and I spent a Semana Santa there some years back and enjoyed it a lot, so I always enjoy reading what you have to say about the place.
And of course I look forward to returning some day and getting to meet you and Paul.

November 15, 2013Nancy, anything you write is a delight. Well done for appreciating that you were not being inspired to do The same things as earlier, before it became a drag to you. It would be awful to think that what gives us so much joy might become an unpleasant chore for you.
I often feel that reading what you write is not very far removed from chatting with you over a glass or across a table, something I am privileged to do from time to time. As on those occasions of friendship, a wide variety of topics is covered in greater or lesser depth, but the time spent chatting is always interesting, irrespective of the topics covered. Your writing gives the same level of enjoyment and satisfaction. So, whatever inspires you at any time, your legion of admirers will feel privileged to be able to read about. November 16, 2013I totally understand where you are coming from. I recently totally redid my blog, my focus has changed from being about living in Merida to living a DIY life. I like to say “WHERE I live my life is not as important as HOW I live my life.”
I still include stuff about living in Mexico because it affects what I do but it’s no longer the main focus of my blog.
If we don’t evolve and grow we stagnate, I think it’s important to acknowledge that our interests change and so do we.
We’re interested in many of the same things so I am really excited to read what you have to say. I’m glad you decided to change your focus to something that excites you instead of not writing at all. Write it, we your audience will happily read it!
