I had no idea that when I wrote about the scourge of chewing gum on the malecón yesterday that there was a project planned for this morning to remove it!
I got a phone call from a friend this morning apologizing for calling so early but conveying the amazing news that there were lots of people out scraping gum off the malecón. And as any good blogger would, I grabbed my camera and hopped right on my bike to see for myself.
The workers were mostly women and kids. I saw a few bottles of acetone or kerosene being used, but they were mostly using just plain old elbow grease. There were some big areas already completed, and they looked great!
I spoke to one man a bit further down the malecón and he said they were going to be scraping the entire length and repainting everything! Since I’d seen them scraping the seawall the other day, I think there’s a possibility he is right on.
I hope I’ll be reporting that the graffiti is being painted out next. Do you think?

August 26, 2012If you want something done, ask the volunteers. They’ll get right on it, where if you ask the powers that be, it might take a while. Good job, Mazatlan!

August 26, 2012We walked through the square this morning and almost half of it has been cleared of gum already! It’s impossible to get rid of every trace, but the areas that have been completed look beautiful. It will be wonderful when the entire Malecon gets the same treatment.

August 26, 2012Wish I were there; I’d be happy to help. Thanks for posting. Sort of restores your faith in folks’ willingness to preserve what is arguably Mazatlan’s most valuable man-made resource. Can you imagine Mazatlan without the malecon?

August 27, 2012Hi everyone!
Two of you mentioned this work was being done by volunteers – I’m not sure if that is the case or not. It might have been a paid work group. The paper hasn’t mentioned the work at all so I don’t know anything further.
It is looking great, though! The malecon is such a treasure, it is nice to see it being cared for.

September 1, 2012People who spit gum on the Malecón should be turned over to the Sinaloa Cartel! LOL…
