The Olimpiada Nacional has been taking place here in Mazatlán during the last few days. I haven’t been too aware of the proceedings except for the traffic revisions, as the schedule has not been published anywhere that I have seen. Many of the events take place at the waterfront, though, so we have seen a few runners and bicyclists as we walk along the malecon.
The picture at the top is from our local paper, the Noroeste, and shows the Sinaloa women’s team, who won the bronze medal in the women’s triathlon. Below is the gold medal winner from Zacatecas. Silver was won by an athlete from Jalisco.
The paper also reports that the hotels here received a “breath” from the Olympiada and they report that they are now at 60% occupied, with 3,000 hotel rooms occupied by athletes and their families. That was a very happy thing to read!
Vinicio Ibarra from Jalisco won first place in the men’s triathlon. An athlete from Veracruz came in second, and Durango, third.
Congratulations to all these hard working athletes!
