New style graffiti

February 15, 2009

I’ve become really interested in the new style graffiti I’m seeing around town.  Some is freehand, artistic painting and some is done using stencils or even collage.  English words are sometimes used.  Anyway, I’ll let the pictures below speak for themselves.

    1. It was taken on Mariano Escobedo on the same block as Bahia Mariscos, I think the second block in from the malecon. A friend who lives on the block says that the son of the owner of the building did the artwork.

    1. I would totally use those stencils (stencils?) in my house. Maybe we need to get a Maz graffiti artist down here!

    1. When we were in Maz, we took all kinds of pics of the stencil graffitti too. That was in 2007 so it has been in your town for awhile. Haven’t seen much of it anywhere else. Bottom line though, it is still graffiti and the perps need to be punished.

    1. Jillian, I’m with you, some of it is really interesting art. I think one of the aspects I love though is that it is on top of the moldy decay on a ruin.

Islagringo, I think maybe I am two-faced because I love this stuff. It is always done on abandoned ruins here, which is a topic I could go on and on about. And I think other people feel that way, too since it doesn’t get removed.

The graffiti that I think needs to be punished is the wordlike letters that are tagged all over town, on occupied buildings, newly painted buildings, the tops of schools, everywhere. I don’t know if it is from gangs or if it is kids acting out or what. Our next door neighbor on the corner gets tagged regularly. One thing I know is that it’s important to paint it out right away so the perps get discouraged.

    1. How do they have time to do w/o getting caught?

    1. I guess we have to agree to disagree on this one. Grafitti is malicious, uninvited and just plain rude. In all of its’ guises. And wherever or however it is placed. Ok, nuff said. Don’t want to start a whole discussion chain.

    1. I respect your not wanting more comments, but I realized I hadn’t said that some of the pictures I showed in this post are authorized artworks, the second and fifth pictures, I know for sure. I think the others may be, also, since they have been there so long.

I think there is a real difference between “tags” where people write on walls to communicate with other gangs, and the photos I showed.

I do agree that people who disrespect someone else’s property should be punished, but I think that frequently we don’t know the whole story. Some of the pictures above are still on the walls where I photographed them back in 2006. Does that mean that the property owners don’t care, that they are absent, or that they gave their permission? I don’t know.
