Stocking up

veggies from the organic market

Saturday morning I grabbed a couple of shopping bags and headed out on foot in San Antonio Tlayacapan. First stop was the organic market at Ol-Lin Vegan Restaurant on Independencia just off the square. They sell real organic produce directly from the local growers. At the top you will see a picture of my haul. Cost was 500 pesos, or $25 USD. I will always choose organic if I have a choice. I save my bargain hunting for the thrift store, not the grocery store!

Next I went to the Saturday maker’s market at Panino Restaurant. I bought a gorgeous fresh baguette and two chocolate croissants from Scandinavian Bakery. I was making lentil soup for lunch and a hunk of nice bread really did hit the spot.

A couple doors down from there I stopped at Lakeside Market. (formerly Smitty’s) I bought some chocolate almonds, chocolate raisins, candied ginger, raisins and a few other things.

That was enough for the moment – we have our treats for the week , don’t you think?

No, not at all! On the way home I HAD to stop and buy the traditional Lenten treat of capirotada (bread pudding) from a woman selling them in front of her house. (50 pesos or $2.50 USD)

This morning – Monday – I had an errand to do so while I had the car out I drove to West Ajijic to the recycling center. My friend volunteers there on Mondays so I got to see her and also buy these fantastic books! Hardbacks are 20 pesos ($1 USD) and paperbacks are 10 pesos (50 cents). I bought a whole bunch of knitting books and several others for 170 pesos. I rounded up a little donation to 200 pesos or $10 USD. What a bargain and what a great service the recycling center provides! I really want to check my schedule and see if I can commit to volunteering there too, seems like a fun and rewarding place to work.

Share and Enjoy !

    1. Fantastic! I hardly cook anymore but do have friends who bring things to me from the Saturday Market!
I have a Kindle and only buy books on line for less than $2
      Life is good!
I don’t think we have a recycling center! But ALMA and the Tuesday tianguis provide us with Thrift items .

      1. Hi Babs, I love to cook and really enjoy the shopping, too. I mostly read on my iPad too but knitting books and cookbooks I like to have hard copies. The other books were impulse buys, I guess I am hoarding for some future power outage or something! xoxo Nancy

      1. Hi Anne, It’s Paul’s favorite too! And my friend at the recycling center is Willie :-). Take care, Nancy
