Day of the Dead in Mazatlán

November 3, 2012

There are so many wonderful holidays here in Mazatlán.  How could I possibly choose a favorite?  I love Moto Week and of course Carnaval, but what about Semana Santa – or El Dia de la Musica?  Every event is celebrated with a parade and fireworks, por supuesto!

But maybe, just maybe, Day of the Dead or El Dia de los Muertos might be my favorite.  It’s such a unique celebration, full of love for family, partying, beer, fireworks, and celebration of those loved ones who have passed on.

Here in Mazatlán various sites in Centro create altars and the traditional callejoneada (parade through the streets) is a full on party with tons of people in costume, fireworks, donkey-pulled beer carts and much more.  Everyone walks through the streets drinking the free beer and celebrating.

This year the Steamroller Press Day of the Dead images were carried aloft and you certainly felt the unique and artsy style that is Mazatlán.  I hope you’ll enjoy the album below!

    1. Nicely done Nancy! We just got home that afternoon from another miserable road trip from Guadalajara so it was nice to see the pictures here.

    1. I love your Countdown messages/photos we received weekly. Live in Winnipeg and have
spent 2 or 3 months in Maz for the past 8 years. I think this email is my favorite. I have never been in Mexico this time of year, but now am more determined than ever to come in the fall. Thanks again and keep those pics coming. Love them all.

    1. Great pictures, enjoyed them very much.

Just a note, finished reading “Countdown” from the beginning and along the way I came across a good recipe for sourdough bread which the family is waiting for me to bake again. Found several other recipes I will try.

Thank you for the time you spend teaching us about Mazatlan, the food, the weather and the wonderful pictures you post.

Looking forward to our next visit.

    1. Wonderful photos, Nancy. I think Day of the Dead may be my favorite holiday as well. It was sort a new experience for me being in San Miguel de Allende this year, different but still terrific. It is great no matter where you are in Mexico, but it sure looks like Mazatlan puts on a show!
