What’s Been Going On With Us?

December 16, 2018

Paul and I are enjoying ourselves these days.  I thought I’d tell you about some of the things we’ve been up to.

It’s kind of amazing, but we have a bit of Holiday Season Flu.  We have set up a little tree and hung the stockings I knitted from the mantel.  We’re even going to go against tradition and even buy a few small gifts for each other.  How fun and different!

The lake is really high right now, at 85% of capacity.  The tree above used to stand next to the water, not in it!  We are enjoying how much closer all the birds are – in the above picture see all the egrets in the tree?  Pelicans, blue herons, night herons, egrets and many others are squawking and flapping and arguing nearby and we love it!  The picture above was taken from the Ajijic malecón.

We got a new car!  We are now buzzing around in our Kia Soul with Jalisco plates.  Cute, isn’t it?

Henry kept lick-lick-licking himself so instead of buying a cone I bought a pool noodle (thanks, Pinterest!) and made my own.  It worked pretty well.  If you have to make one, make the pieces of noodle bigger than I did.  He is fine now.

Our place here doesn’t have purified water so we had been buying the garafons for our drinking water.  They can be a bit scary as you never really know what the water quality is, whether the bottles get sterilized between uses and whether the plastic leaches into the water when trucks sit it the hot sun. So we bought a Berkey water filter through Amazon Mexico and have been extremely happy with it.  It is so powerful that it can filter water during natural disasters or while off grid hiking, etc.  We bought a Royal and it is a great size for the dogs and us, and the first filters should last about 6 years.  Read about it here. (I am not getting paid to say this, by the way.)

Another purchase, this time used off someone who offered it for sale on a local Facebook page. I have owned several juicers over the years but never used them much because they were too big a hassle to clean.  This Champion juicer is wonderful – easy to clean and use and a real workhorse.  We have had fresh juice every day since I bought it.

Look at that sunset!  Isn’t it lovely?  Our place faces South so we don’t have a direct view but the sky is filled with this subtle color most nights.  I posted a gorgeous video of a sunrise on Instagram the other morning, it is even prettier still.

We hope all of you have a very happy holiday season.  Thanks so much for reading!

      1. Judith, the best to you and Ken, too! We always enjoy life and are settling in nicely. xoxo

    1. It is always fun to see what you and yours are up to. Such beautiful country and if I see it right, your home is very close to the lake? Lots of envy going on here. Merry Christmas and have a wonderful holiday season!

      1. Hi Elena! Yes, we are just back a little ways from the lake – really makes the bird life fun to watch. Take care! Nancy

    1. Looks like San Antonio suits you well! If we had decided to live at the lake, SAT and Riberas would have been high on our list. But we didn’t care for the traffic, so we are car-free in Guadalajara. Thanks for the tip on the water filter; looks like a great alternative to garrafones and expensive under-sink systems.
Feliz Navidad y próspero Año Nuevo to you all!

      1. Hi Deborah, nice to hear from you! We haven’t gotten irritated by the traffic yet – maybe because we mostly go the back way into Ajijic. We do walk a lot, too! I hope you both have a nice holiday and if you every come this way, give a holler!

    1. Glad everything is good for you two. Thanks for posting the update.
All the best in the holiday season and the coming year.

      1. Ken, thanks for commenting! We are doing great but do miss our friends in Maz. Take care! Nancy

    1. Lovely Nancy, thanks so much for the report. We have noticed that your posts are further apart now, we hope it’s because you are more relaxed in your greener surrounds. Merry Christmas to you and Paul.

      1. Hi Wendy! I hope that all is well with you. Yes, I have been posting less the last year or so – it seems Facebook has displaced blogs but now with so many being wary of Facebook maybe people will come back to blogs! We are enjoying life here, so many new places to explore and people to meet. Miss you though 🙁 xoxo

    1. As always it is lovely to read about your life’s adventures. For years I have appreciated your sharing and this is no exception. We miss seeing your faces in Mazatlan but joyful that you have found a new adventure and a new home. If I ever Venture down that way can I look you up?

      1. Hi Mary! Yes, send me a FB message if you come over this way. Lots of former Maz folks here 🙂
