It’s a Winter Wonderland

Winter is so lovely here in Mazatán!  We enjoy walking every morning although with all the construction on the malecón North of the Fisherman’s Monument we have moved our walk more South.   The new walking surface of the malecón is lovely and the views are wonderful as always.  There is some controversy in town about the vendors at the cliff divers being removed against their will but I love being able to walk through in the morning and not smell...

A Walk on Mazatlán’s Malecon

This summer is going to be the summer of getting in shape for me.  I wasn’t able to work out a lot while I was having chemotherapy, and I realized recently that I had lost a fair bit of strength in my muscles.  So it is time to really get to work! Every other day I have been using my Nordic Track cross-country ski machine (which I love) for a half hour and working my arms with hand weights. I...

Mazatlán’s malecón cleanup

I had no idea that when I wrote about the scourge of chewing gum on the malecón yesterday that there was a project planned for this morning to remove it! I got a phone call from a friend this morning apologizing for calling so early but conveying the amazing news that there were lots of people out scraping gum off the malecón.  And as any good blogger would, I grabbed my camera and hopped right on my bike to see...

Mazatlan in the morning

It’s lovely in the morning here.  The sun doesn’t hit the malecón full on until sometime after 8 so if you get out early it is actually nice and cool.  Today I rode my bike North to Valentino’s and thought I’d share a couple of pictures with you. I love being out when the malecón is full of exercisers – people are walking with weights,  jogging, running, skating, and biking.  There are fewer hazards –  inattentive children with little dogs...

Semana Santa in Mazatlán

I love living in a place where people are always so happy. I think Semana Santa is the happiest time of all for Mazatlán visitors. People come from near and far to enjoy a relaxing springtime vacation here. The weather is perfect – between 80 and 85 degrees – and it is beautiful and sunny with a fantastic breeze. Families set up an umbrella or some sort of shade and spend the entire day on the beach. We went for...

A New Year’s Dream for Mazatlan

At the end of a year I always like to do a bit of “summing up.” I think about what went well and what didn’t for the year just ending  and often think of about my hope for the future. I did make my own resolutions this year, but that’s not what I’m talking about here.  I’m talking about my Mazatlán hopes for the new year. So many of my previous “hopes” have come to pass – the new organic...

Why I love Mazatlán

One of the most common questions I get asked when I travel is “How did you happen to choose Mazatlán?”  Of course that question usually comes from someone who hasn’t been here or who didn’t have time to explore it much. When Paul and I first started exploring various locations in México with an eye to retirement we made up a list of the things a community needed to have.  I wrote a blog post about it back in October...
