The rain birds are here

May 20, 2020

There are always lots of things to learn when moving to a new area. Here in Jalisco we found that the rainy season is a few weeks away by the rain birds letting us know.

At first they start with a lone one or two on the occasional evening at dusk and within a few weeks they are singing away pretty much day and night.

What are rain birds? When we first moved here we read about them on the local groups and wondered what people were talking about. What kind of bird sings at night, anyway? Well actually they aren’t birds at all, they are cicadas. I seldom see them, just the occasional wing on the patio in the morning.

Turn your speakers on and listen to the video above if you want to hear what they sound like at dusk.

We’re looking forward to the rain, having had three nights of rain a week ago that was a godsend for the garden.

    1. What a lovely sound. Rain birds, who knew. I’m sure that you are looking forward to some different weather.

      1. Hi Contessa! The weather here is always lovely but we are looking forward to the rains coming. Hope you and Colin are well.

    1. I love them. If you drive the cuota from Guadalajara to Colima, there is a canyon where you can hear them singing in the afdternoon and evening. They are so loud you can often hear them even if the windows are closed.

      1. It’s probably been ten years since I drove that rode, I don’t think I noticed them! Must have been a different time of year. Stay well.

    1. Oh Nancy what a godsend for me. Always great to know what’s happening with you two of course. But I have been away from home for the longest time ever, a full year now, and I crave, actually yearn for, hose cicadas sounds. So, thanks mate!

      1. Smells and sounds are those things that transport us the fastest, I sure know what you mean. I’m glad the sound gave you a taste of home. xoxo
