domestic wonder

Maybe I wonder why I am being so domestic?  I have been having a lot of fun playing at home lately.   All my life while I was busy working I made time for sewing, baking, knitting, and gardening… but since we’ve retired I am really having a ball. In the last couple of weeks I’ve done some sewing – repairing clothes and altering clothes for better fit.  I bought some great fabric and made a bed cover and pillow shams...

We love visitors

…and we had a wonderful time when our son Phil visited this week on the spur of the moment.  He is still planning on bringing the family for a visit at Thanksgiving, but this trip was a solo one.  That’s the way it is when the kids are in school! Here are a few highlights: One day was a bit overcast, but enjoying a beer under a palapa is still a wonderful way to spend an afternoon!   Of course...

The last drop

of paint, that is.  No more posts, I promise! The house above needs  a little touch up still but it looks so much better!x The one below is a beauty. x This is one of my favorite homes in all of Mazatlán.  I especially love the second floor porch! x How about this one? x Or this? x The paint job below might be called putting lipstick on a pig, but if the concrete was repaired it would be a...

What’s going on ’round here…

Well, let’s see. I’ve been busy lately – nothing too crazy to report, but having a good time.  A couple of weeks ago I took a breadmaking class that came at the perfect time for me.  I had been baking bread on and off mostly using the no-knead recipe provided by Pátzcuaro resident Tancho at Rancho Canyon Cookbook.  My results were usually edible but I didn’t feel I had the kind of control I wanted, so I knew I wanted...

There’s new paint everywhere

There is even more fresh paint in Mazatlán’s Centro Historico than I reported back in March here.  Some of the painting is just the usual homeowners painting their houses before the rainy season comes, and some is a joint project between the Coppel Foundation and the City of Mazatlán.  I thought I’d show you a few from a very small patch of Centro.   The one at the top had needed a lot of concrete repair, but it looks great...

A Bird Tale

Do you remember back in 2008 when Paul and I took care of 50 baby parrots for a couple of weeks?  I wrote about the experience here and here and here. When they left our care I wrote about them here. When they were about a year old Conrehabit released them to the wild, but a few were evaluated as either being too tame or physically unable to live in the wild.  That’s how we ended up with Pancho and...

You can find your inner artist here…

There are a lot of things going on in Mazatlán that you can do or visit if you’re an art lover. During the season (November to May) you can go on the First Friday Art Walk in Centro Historico.  More than 40 artists show their work in a fairly compact area of Mazatlàn’s Old Town.  The Art Walk is from 4 pm to 8 pm, so after you pick up a map and plan your route you can  finish the...

It’s like a country & western song

…He loved me and I left him and now he don’t love me no more… When I was in San Francisco last month I stayed with my best friend Jeannie.  When we were planning our move to Mexico we asked her if she’d mind taking care of our yellow shouldered Amazon, Tiko, for a couple of weeks until we got settled in our new house.  I planned to fly up and bring him down on the plane with me. FAIL!...
